timestranscript.com - Camping is tops for physical activity and interaction with nature - Breaking News, New Brunswick, Canada

"According to the 2009 Active Healthy Kids Canada report card, Canadian children and youth received a failing grade for physical activity levels. With kids spending as much as six hours a day online, playing video games and watching television, parents should be making a conscious effort to get themselves and their children outside to increase their levels of physical activity.

A family camping trip is a great way to not only be active with fun activities like hiking, canoeing and swimming but it is also a way to address the nature deficient behaviours that urban children in particular experience when they do not have opportunities to connect with our natural environment," says Dr. Mark Tremblay, director of healthy active living and obesity research at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and chief scientific officer of Active Healthy Kids Canada. That's a real shame in a country like Canada that prides itself on its access to the world's biggest and most interesting playground - nature."

ATVs destroy trail at marsh - Owen Sound Sun Times - Ontario, CA

"Editor:

I was recently hiking along the Bruce Trail where it crosses Bognor Marsh and was dismayed to see the devastation caused by ATVs along the north side of the marsh.

This whole stretch of footpath is now a disaster for walking with huge ruts and long stretches of mud and puddles.

Do these ATV machines have any merit whatsoever?

Love Your Mother | Canoe & Kayak Magazine

"Kevin Callan never imagined that one woman’s love of canoeing in pristine Ontario wilderness areas would create a global movement to clean up and rediscover “lost” canoe routes.

Callan, a well-known Canadian canoeist and author of 12 canoeing and camping guidebooks, is organizing the fifth annual Great Wilderness Clean-up this weekend. The grassroots event started in 2006 when Nancy Maddock and friends collected over 100 bags of garbage on Mother’s Day weekend on popular canoe routes in Algonquin Provincial Park, a heavily used canoe-tripping area north of Toronto. Word spread through the canoeing community on web forums and Callan got involved and implored other paddlers to clean up their favorite canoe areas. Last year, Callan says the two-day event had more support in England, Scotland and Brazil than in Canada; it also mobilized a number of canoe route clean-up efforts in the United States."

There was even a handful of outrigger canoes, that participated in their own timed race - a first for the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racing Association.

Redemption and the courier’s dad - The Globe and Mail

"Last fall, after the catastrophic Toronto encounter between Michael Bryant and bicycle courier Darcy Allan Sheppard, I wrote a column lamenting the swift intervention by the PR firm Navigator on Mr. Bryant’s behalf. I also said we’d started to learn about Mr. Sheppard, and that he was the product of a “failed adoption,” plus much foster care.

Soon afterward, I got a letter from an Edmonton man describing himself as “an enthusiastic reader,” and the adoptive father of Darcy Allan Sheppard. His name was Allan Sheppard. He said he found my piece “insightful” but “there is one reference you might want to reconsider.” It was “failed adoption.”"

Coyle: Michael Bryant a wiser man after tragedy - thestar.com

"Much nonsense has been spouted in recent days. Some have said the dropping of charges against Bryant declares open season on cyclists. Others talk of a war on cyclists. The comments are as ridiculous as they are unhelpful.

If there’s a lesson in this story, it is in the cost of untreated addiction and mental health needs – the story of a man whose pattern of conduct (if the ghastly consequence of an appallingly difficult life) pretty much assured him a date with a jail cell, or an early coffin, or as the star in someone else’s tragedy.

It’s a story about the destructive – and often self-destructive – consequences of rage. The prisons are full of people who lost it for 28 seconds, or even less."

'Children and youth lack the knowledge, development and skills to safely operate these vehicles. ATV use by children has resulted in serious injury and death'"

Cycling advocates decry decision to drop Bryant's charges | Toronto & GTA | News | Toronto Sun

"Biking advocates and friends of Darcy Allan Sheppard were outraged to learn charges were dropped against Michael Bryant.

Marli Epp, the spokesman for the Toronto Bike Messenger Association, told the Sun the justice system has failed.

'It's legal to kill somebody with their car in this country,' Epp said. 'That's unacceptable. We are questioning the fact that justice cannot be served here.'

The association is planning a vigil at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday along Bloor St. W., just east of Avenue Rd., where Sheppard died."

niagara river recreational trail posts - Take Paws | Dog Time - Dog Blog Network

"I’m not sure if people think of Niagara Falls as a dog friendly destination … but it is. True, you’re not going to be able to bring Fido on the touristy stuff you did on your honeymoon (walking Cave of the Winds, riding Maid of the Mist, or ascending Skylon Tower). However, there is so much more to Niagara Falls. Victoria Park, which runs along the Niagara Parkway opposite the falls, is beautiful and dog friendly. Have you been to the Whirlpool, the Floral Clock, or the Botanical Gardens? All are pet friendly. And encompassing all of these attractions is the 35-mile Niagara River Recreational Trail, a paved path starting at Fort George on Lake Ontario and running south to Fort Erie on Lake Erie."

"The forested ravines that wind through Toronto are one of our city's most valuable resources. They filter the air, absorb rain and stormwater, and prevent erosion. Low water levels raise serious concerns

"The immediate consequences of this spring’s low water levels range from good to mildly disappointing. There are fewer mosquitoes (good) but a kayaking competition was cancelled (not so good).

But if Environment Canada predictions for hot weather and little rain in June prove accurate, Ottawans could face serious problems in coming months.

Ottawa Riverkeeper executive director Meredith Brown said Ottawa’s water is now at September levels and this could harm crops."

Trail links expanding in the fall - Peterborough Examiner - Ontario, CA

"An uninterrupted waterfront walkway from Millennium Park to Del Crary Park has moved closer to realization.

The city has used $1,290,000 in federal gas tax funding to construct a critical section of the Otonabee River Trail that will eventually link the two parks along Peterborough's waterfront.

The precarious link of floating docks that once ran along the Holiday Inn waterfront has been replaced with a concrete walkway.

'This was an expensive proposition,' explained urban planner Brian Buchardt. 'There was a lot of work done here to ensure its longevity... its accessibility.'"

Earthroots - Ontario's forests still at risk

"Toronto - Despite announcements made today, the devastation of Ontario’s forests continues largely unabated. Giant clearcuts, which level forested areas as large as pre-megacity Toronto (10,000 ha), still make up 94% of the area logged each year in Ontario. Canada’s logging industry employs only 2/3 of the workers per tree cut that Sweden employs, and Ontario has still not respected the human right of Indigenous peoples to say “no” to logging on their traditional lands."

Anything can be hazardous for a cyclist - The Barrie Examiner - Ontario, CA

"Mixing cyclists with motorized vehicles is always a fickle thing.

When car meets train, train always wins. When car meets bike, car always wins.

That cyclists are vulnerable is inescapable. Road bikes -- the better the lighter -- offer no protection and there is no prospect for protection.

The best we could hope for is strapping a crafted piece of Styrofoam with a colourful design on our heads. That's helpful in tumbles, not a crash."

* Encourage Ontarians to use water more efficiently by creating and implementing innovative approaches to conservation.

Martin Goodman Trail / The Wider Waterfront / Explore Projects / Waterfront Toronto

"Giving people more access to the waterfront is a key priority for Waterfront Toronto and it’s why we have made a number of improvements to the Martin Goodman Trail. Since 2005, Waterfront Toronto has completed several improvements and additions to the popular multi-use recreational trail. Improvements included the repair and maintenance to particularly bad sections of the trail, filling in gaps in the trail system, and adding an extension of the trail through a section of the Port Lands to improve public access to Tommy Thompson Park."

Hiking - Things to do in Ontario - Hunch

"Hiking is an outdoor activity which consists of walking in natural environments, often on hiking trails. The word hiking is understood in all English-speaking countries, but there are differences in usage of the term.

A set of customs and ettiquette have arisen around hiking. One goal of hiking is to observe the natural world: some hikers make an effort to minimize the environmental impact of their hiking. Another set of behaviors is designed to minimize the personal risk of hiking."

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper

"If you can block out the distant din of traffic and glimpses of high-rises, there are spots along the Don River that could fool you into thinking it is wilderness.

But the omnipresent smell of sewage wafting from dozens of storm drain pipes and culverts that empty into the Don cannot be imagined away, a stinking reminder of the work still needed to clean it up.

We went for a canoe ride Sunday in the annual Paddle the Don event, sponsored by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and found stunning beauty along its meandering course, in contrast to the bleak iron shoring and multi-lane traffic along its lower stretch.

About 600 people in canoes and kayaks traversed 16 kilometres of the Don, from E.T. Seton Park, near Leslie St. and Eglinton Ave., to the Keating Channel, with some raising money for the Conservation Foundation of Greater Toronto, to be used for river restoration projects.

The Don is normally so shallow that canoes couldn’t be used to navigate it; an upstream dam was opened to raise the water level allow enough to float the craft."

"The Liberal government’s preoccupation with saving electricity is undermining other energy conservation efforts, warns Environment Commissioner Gord Miller.

In a 70-page report released Monday – entitled Rethinking Energy Conservation In Ontario – that criticizes the province for not doing enough to encourage Ontarians to use less gasoline and other fuels, Miller said it is time for a policy revamp.

“The government’s approach to energy conservation is uncoordinated and improvised with no clear plan,” he said in a statement.

Miller said Queen’s Park needs to examine ways to conserve oil, propane, natural gas, and gasoline.

“We are too focused on electricity. We need a strategy that addresses conservation of all sources of energy,” he said."

Locavore News – World Sustain Ontario

"Sustainable urban agriculture: stocktake and opportunities

This paper reviews research on urban agriculture which relates to the three dimensions of sustainability: social, economic and environmental. We propose that urban agriculture has three elements: urban agriculture in isolation; its interface with the people and environment within which it is situated; and its contribution to the design of built form. Additionally, we consider its scale: micro, meso and macro. The analysis draws attention to legal, social and economic constraints and opportunities."

Dualsport Diary

"Notwithstanding the heroic efforts of the Ottawa Mountain Biking Association, who have selflessly and persistently built some fantastic trails in Kanata Lakes, the Ottawa region is inexcusably devoid of good mountain biking. This despite having a world-class landscape with immense trail potential and a vibrant local cycling community.

I'm not making an uninformed claim. As a mountain biker since 1987, when I moved to Ottawa in 1994 one of the first things I did was explore the region's rides. Since then I've ridden pretty much every metre of rideable trail and road within 100 km of Almonte, where I live. Those were some epic days. Now I'm exploring further by motorbike, trying to find untapped potential."

Frontier Adventure Challenge - Jack Van Dorp Racing.com – Ontario Racing

"Peter and I drove to Deerhurst Friday night, arriving around 10 pm and opting for the less ostentatious back-of-the-van-in-the-parking-lot accomodations. Lots of signs of renovations around in advance of next months G8 Summit – including some dumpsters and a variety of shipping trailers here and there. We wanted to get a good sleep though, because the race was anticipated to take 6-8 hours.

We tuned up our bikes using the van light, found a quiet spot at the end of the parking lot, and bunked down for the night. It was a bit cozy with the two of us squeezed between our bikes, but we got by fairly comfortably. Andrew, our teammate, stayed over in Orillia before heading up Saturday morning."

TheRecord.com - Local - Warmest April on record follows winter’s ‘invisible drought’

"The “invisible drought” is now easier to see.

Waterloo Region — and most of southern Ontario — just finished the warmest April on record, after one of the driest winters in 70 years.

The low water levels in rivers and creeks are more typical of midsummer than spring. Farmers are already irrigating parched fields to coax newly planted seeds to sprout. Allergy season arrived three weeks early, without any steady rains to clean the air."

Restrictions Lifted On Outdoor Burning In Northwestern Ontario

"McGuinty Government Removes Restricted Fire Zone

At noon today, the Restricted Fire Zone across Northwestern Ontario was lifted. Campfires for cooking and warmth are now allowed in this area.

On Friday, April 23, the Restricted Fire Zone was ordered due to the extreme fire hazard and unusually dry spring conditions which resulted in increased forest fire activity. The restrictions are no longer required as the fire hazard has eased due to precipitation across region."
