NATURAL HERITAGE TRAIL FOR CHATHAM-KENT

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent purchased 32km of an old rail corridor running through Chatham-Kent to the Elgin County boundary and will convert it into a multi-use, non-motorized natural heritage trail. Carolinian Canada Coalition staff conducted a natural heritage study and assessment, including species monitoring, along the corridor. The field work is all done and the final report will be submitted in January. The results of the study will help guide trail design, conservation of Species and Habitats at Risk and ecological restoration along the trail. Exciting finds include Species At Risk such as Eastern Flowering Dogwood, Dense Blazing Star, Western Chorus Frog, Snapping Turtle, several rare species such as Compass Plant, Pillose Evening Primrose, Missouri Ironweed, Shellbark Hickory, as well as centuries old remnant prairie habitats.
