"The Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) is launching a new initiative to bring awareness to the health problems children face by spending too much time indoors.
Growing up Green, set to launch tomorrow (Friday), is an RBG fundraising initiative focusing on health, education and environmental sustainability for children in Ontario.
With close to $750,000 in initial support from groups such as the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation and the W. Garfield Weston Foundation, RBG says it will work with private and public sector partners to provide educational programming, access to outdoor activities and increased green space."

Crackdown on cycle-paths: Levy | Sue-Ann Levy | Columnists | Comment | Toronto Sun
"I will make no bones about it. Cyclists who use the sidewalks to get from Point A to Point B in this city are for the most part rude, arrogant and a pain in the neck.
I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been startled by sidewalk cyclists aggressively pedalling behind me — without warning — as I walked my two dachsies or jogged on the city’s sidewalks, forcing me and my dogs to quickly jump out of their way.
Dare tell them the sidewalks are for pedestrians. Even dare."

Antiquated bike bylaws need updating: police - thestar.com
"The province decided two years ago that electric bikes should be governed by the same rules as regular bicycles. That decision changed the implications of at least one bylaw. Bicycles with a wheel diameter of more than 61 centimetres cannot go on Toronto sidewalks, but smaller ones can.
Since Vespa-style electric bikes or scooters are built with smaller wheels, the outdated bylaw allows some e-bikers to legally use sidewalks.
“So we have these people whipping along the sidewalks at 32 km/h on a vehicle that can weigh a couple hundred pounds, with a rider,” Smith said. “This is what’s causing us concern.”"

The Rideau Canal, Ottawa Designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2007, the Rideau Canal in downtown Ottawa turns into Canada's longest skateway in the winter. If you're a committed walker, a path on each side lets you partake on solid ground.
Top trail: Start just east of the parliament buildings and head south for 7.8 km to Dows Lake.
The Don Valley, Toronto Minutes from downtown Toronto, this trail is flanked by a highway and a train track. However, the Don River, which runs alongside the path, and regular fox and deer sightings give the feel of wilderness within the hustle and bustle of the city.
Top trail: Start at Riverdale Farm and head north to the Evergreen Brick Works environmental centre for a 3.5 km walk.

Conservation Authorities and Province Partner to Protect Ontario’s Drinking Water Sources through New Phase of Stewardship Program for Landowners and Businesses :: NorthumberlandView.ca :: A View Like No Other
"The ODWSP operates under the Clean Water Act (2006) which helps protect drinking water from source to tap with a multi-barrier approach that stops contaminants from entering sources of drinking water - lakes, rivers and aquifers.
Ontario's Clean Water Act:
requires that local communities - through local Source Protection Committees - assess existing and potential threats to their water, and that they set out and implement the actions needed to reduce or eliminate these threats
empowers communities to take action to prevent threats from becoming significant
requires public participation on every local source protection plan - the planning process for source protection is open to anyone in the community
requires that all plans and actions are based on sound science.
