EMC Events - For Ottawa and Eastern Ontario residents there is no better sign that spring has sprung than the arrival of the 'Valley Fishing and Outdoor Show.' The 12th annual extravaganza will be staged in Carp April 8-10.
This year the slogan is "Family Fun, Fishing and Hunting" and chief organizer Dave Arbour said last week all three buildings have completely sold out.
"We have more than 100 exhibitors. With some new outfitters from Ontario and Quebec involved it is going to be a very big show," Arbour states.

Enjoying the Ontario Outdoors in spring!
There are many trails that are paved or have top coating layers that will make them less mucky or wet in the springtime if that is something you wish to avoid.
There are many trails in the Central Ontario area that can be found and enjoyed all year round. Visit these great resources to find trails in regions that are of interest to you. Simcoe County Trails provides great information for trails in the Simcoe County area and Ontario Trails provides information on trails in other areas throughout Ontario.
Visiting a nearby Provincial Park or Conservation Area also gives you an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors close to home.

OFAH Clubs make a difference
MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 21, 2011) - It takes countless hours and significant financial resources to support fish and wildlife conservation initiatives in Ontario. Fortunately, there are Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) member clubs across the province willing to take on that challenge.
Every year at its annual conference, the OFAH recognizes the efforts of its member clubs that top the list of fundraisers through OFAH Conservation Lottery ticket sales. This year, the Georgian Bay Anglers and Hunters and Sudbury Game and Fish Protective Association were honored during the President's Reception.

Brant Tract won’t be home to turbines
Bruce County councillors have turned down a request to lease one of the county's premier recreational woodlands for industrial wind development.
Councillors accepted a request by Chris LaForest, the county's director of planning, to decline a proposal from Elexco Ltd. on behalf of its client, Pattern Ontario Wind Development, to lease the entire 850-acre Brant Tract County Forest as an industrial wind energy park.
"Department staff have evaluated the proposal and it is felt that the proposal is not consistent with the initial intent of the agreement forest program, nor is consistent with the managed forest objectives adopted by the county," LaForest said after a meeting of the agriculture, tourism and planning committee in Port Elgin Thursday.

Born to Be a Trail Runner - NYTimes.com
Born to Be a Trail Runner - NYTimes.com: "These events are trail races governed by three rules: no fees, no awards, no whining. Distances are typically 50 kilometers or 50 miles, but vary according to a race director’s whims or ability to borrow his buddy’s GPS device. There are no lotteries, no expos, no qualifying times, no triple-digit entry fees subsidizing multimillion-dollar “running clubs.” No one will urinate on you from the upper span of the Verrazano Bridge, and you won’t shiver for hours in a corral before the starting gun. Everyone charges off as equals, Braveheart-style."

Canadian Trails Federation at Trailhead Ontario
Trailhead Ontario is pleased to announce the full participation of The Canadian Trails Federation at Trailhead Ontario 2011. The CTF is a national organization made up of organizations that function more or less like The Ontario Trails Council. Recently the CTF was a full participant in the National Trails Coalition, and at the National Roundtable on Trails, in Banff last November. The members of the CTF will be participating in two meetings. The annual general meeting is held on April 18, 2011, and there will be a round table of national organizations on Tuesday afternoon. For Ontario based organizations this represents a real opportunity to network out of province on issues such as Heritage 1812 trail initiatives, construction, use, and management of trails. Sparrow Lake – good to ride?
I have a vacation planned (July) at a Sparrow Lake resort and wondered if anyone would recommend bringing the mountain bike along? Any challenging/technical trails? And, are big cats/bears an issue? What about flies and mosquitoes (are they unbearable)?

Ontario Nature Greenway Coordinator
Ontario Nature protects wild species and wild spaces through conservation, education and public engagement, connecting thousands of individuals and communities with nature. We have a network of more than 140 affiliated nature organizations across Ontario and a staff of 20. Ontario Nature's 80-year history of protecting nature in the province provides the foundation for our current priorities. These include conserving an interconnected system of greenways and waterways in southern and eastern Ontario, protecting Ontario's boreal forest, protecting and recovering endangered species, and connecting people with nature through meaningful volunteer experiences and information on Ontario's wildlife and habitats.
The Greenway Program Coordinator will work with staff and partner groups to coordinate the planning and implementation of Ontario Nature's efforts to conserve biodiversity and natural ecosystems throughout southern and eastern Ontario. Key to success is an ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of partners within the not-for-profit, government and private sectors.

Nature In Deed new resource for rural living
Rural landowners now have a place to turn for comprehensive information about rural living and land management. The Lanark County Stewardship Council, with input from former Environmental Education of Ontario chair Elise Houghton, partnered with several non-government organizations and the Ministry of Natural Resources to develop a web portal linking rural landowners to practical information. Nature In Deed (www.natureindeed.com) was recently launched.

March snowmobile fatalities can be prevented
OPP and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) are concerned about an increase in fatal snowmobile incidents this March. While the number of deaths investigated by the OPP has seen an overall decline to date this season, five tragedies in the past couple of weeks indicate that sledders are not adjusting their riding habits to the late season conditions. The causes of these tragic deaths are common, predictable and preventable, given that alcohol or excessive speed has played a direct role in nearly every fatal incident investigated by police.

Toronto Sun ski columnist Lori Knowles explores Ontario ski resorts offering both alpine & cross country skiing...
“You know, Lori,” a friend reminded me recently, “not all parents like to downhill ski.” I’d been extolling the virtues of the ski life, marvelling at what a fabulous, all-inclusive winter family sport skiing can be, when she dropped that bomb on me.“I’m willing to take the kids skiing because they like it,” she continued, “but I don’t want to ski myself. I’d much rather do something else.” Ontario Ski Trails (that's why we list ski reports on our website - they also have X-xountry!)

Use trails before snow is gone
Algonquin Highlands's trails coordinator is reminding the public that the township's ski and snowshoe trails are still open and is encouraging people to take advantage of them before it's too late.
"Last year, the snow was gone March 1," Mark Coleman told the Times late last week. This year, however, is a different story. "We've got a considerable snow base still."
The township operates 25 kilometres of ski trails and 15 kilometres of snowshoe trails near the Frost Centre, where its trails office is located.

Waterfowl Weekends: Presqu'ile Provincial Park, south of Brighton, is also on a major migratory route. As many as 10,000 birds representing 25 different species of ducks, geese and swans are expected to make a rest stop in Presqu'ile Bay. Volunteer naturalists and telescopes will be positioned at various viewing hides around the park on Waterfowl Weekend, March 19 to 20. Niagara Region Bike Map - Cycling App
The Region's Bike Map (updated 2011) has details about multi-use trails, bike paths and information on all the back roads in the region. It is good for recreational, tourist or utilitarian bicyclists.
The map includes information on road conditions (paved vs. unpaved), bicycle facilities (bike lanes), traffic conditions and location of hills is presented.
Many bike shops and tourist information centers in Niagara region have copies of the bike map available, as well as our headquarters.
The map is not available online as its large size (2 1/2 feet x 3 1/2 feet) makes it impossible to print out on normal printers.
We also distribute copies at major bike shows in Southern Ontario.
