Ontario Trails News - Develop, Manage, Use and Preserve Trails

A new policy statement from the American Heart Association says preventing heart disease before it starts is a good long-term investment in America's health.  The statement summarizes years of research on the value of investing in prevention, particularly through community-based changes to make it easier and cheaper to live a healthy lifestyle.  For example, the statement says every dollar spent on building trails for walking or biking saves three-dollars in medical costs.  It also says drastically cutting the amount of salt in the food supply to support an average intake of 15-hundred milligrams per day may reduce high blood pressure in the country by 25 per cent, saving $26 billion in healthcare costs annually.  The policy statement is on the American Heart Association's website and is published in the journal Circulation.
