"The 53rd annual Toronto International Boat Show, Canada's largest marine marketplace, runs Jan. 8-16 at the Direct Energy Centre's Exhibition Place.

Special attractions of the show include an indoor lake that takes more than six days to create. More than 1 million gallons of Lake Ontario water will flood Ricoh Coliseum.

Shows with wakeboarders and wakeskaters will take place on the lake and attendees can get out on the water free and ride an inflatable boat, canoe, kayak or paddleboat. Other activities at the lake include Duma the waterskiing and boat-driving dog; personal watercraft, boat-handling and stand-up paddle boarding demonstrations; and canoe and kayak seminars."

Ski trails are open at Circle R Ranch - Londoner - Ontario, CA

"While many Londoners may be tired of shoveling from the record snowfall of last week, there are others who are jumping for joy as the fluffy stuff blankets the ground.

The Circle R Ranch Touring Centre, for instance, has opened some of its cross-country ski trails much earlier than anticipated.

'This is the earliest ski season that we can ever remember,' said Joan Russell, of the family-owned business. As of last weekend, some of the beginner trails were open and Russell was hoping for colder weather to provide a perfect base for the other runs."

Snowmobile trails not open yet (OPP Report) - Goderich Signal-Star - Ontario, CA

"The Huron OPP has been advised by members of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs that people have been observed trespassing on the trails. In an effort to ensure safety for all, the OPP is helping to ensure that the message goes out that none of the trails are open yet for public use. Entering the trails at this time is considered to be trespassing, and charges will be laid. There is a serious safety issue for those travelling on the trails prior to them being opened. In addition, private property can be damaged by premature use."

"After years of planning, waiting, fundraising, frustration, disappointment and hard work, the now-infamous Madawaska Bridge is finally open for business once again.

On Friday, Dec. 10, just after 1 p.m., Brenda Welsh, president of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs, and Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant officially cut the ribbon, declaring the bridge once again open for recreational travel."

"The city is completing some truly innovative cycling facilities along Stone Road. Segregated bike lanes (also called a cycling track), sharrows and Guelph’s first bike box are designed to make it safer and easier for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to share the road."

North Bay hunters fined - The North Bay Nugget - Ontario, CA

"Two North Bay hunters have been fined a total of $2,250 and one had his hunting licence sus-pended following an incident this fall.

A loaded rifle was located on a gun rack on the ATV. The OPP officer conducted a roadside breath test," according to the MNR."

Over $2,250 in fines and penalties assessed. Follow the rules regarding vehicles ORV's and firearms. Keep trails safe.

One Billion Bottles recycled - an Ontario success story - Environmental Communication Options/Huff Strategy

"Today, the One Billionth liquor container was returned to The Beer Store under the Bag it Back program, the Ontario government’s highly successful deposit return program for wine, spirit and beer containers sold through LCBO and Ontario winery retail stores.

The Bag it Back milestone was celebrated by a reception committee for the One Billionth Bottle made up of Ontario Environment Minister, John Wilkinson, The Beer Store President, Ted Moroz, and Executive Director of the Conservation Council of Ontario, Chris Winter. They were assisted in selecting the One Billionth Bottle by The Beer Store employee Victoria Trueman from the Bathurst and Dupont Beer Store who helps process incoming beer, wine and spirit containers every day."

Northern Ontario Investment Improves Job Outlook

The Township of Nipigon is looking at transforming an abandoned rail line into a tourist attraction to create jobs and promote economic development.
With support from the Northern Communities Investment Readiness (NCIR) program, Nipigon is studying the feasibility of developing a multi-use recreational trail on the decommissioned CN Kinghorn Rail Line that once linked Nipigon to Thunder Bay. Developing a trail system would broaden the tourism industry in the region.
The investment is part of the government's five-year Open Ontario plan to create jobs and economic opportunities in Northern Ontario."

"The Town presented Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Minister Kathleen Wynne with a Christmas wish list of items during a recent one-on-one hour-long meeting.

Wynne, who was in town Dec. 3 for an evening event, met with Mayor Rick Bonnette, several councillors and Town staff, in response to the Mayor’s letter on the proposed MTO highways through Halton Hills, sent earlier this year.

“We had an whole array of items to discuss,” Bonnette told The Independent & Free Press."

"A few select sections of snowmobile trails are now available on a limited basis for early season riding.

These Early Season Priority (ESP) Trails are a project initiated by the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC), in co-operation with its districts, clubs and volunteers, to provide permit holders with their first riding opportunities before Christmas.

Typically, the entire OFSC system trails may not be fully open until January."

"Canada is clearly blessed with some of the most expansive lake districts in North America… no better example sits a super simple 45 minute drive from our home here in Almonte Ontario… the Frontenac Lake System.  In all about 400 square kilometers of lakes… about 25 in all and all set up with wilderness camping; camping only accessible by boat.  Each site is about 20 minute paddle from each other and depending on the weekend, you rarely ever see anyone.  Late this summer the family and I decided on a 5 day expedition into the middle!  With a 6 and 9 year old, though used to wilderness camping, this still was a logistical challenge."

Grand River Valley's "Hiking Classroom"

"Many people hike the forests of Southern Ontario, but have no idea of what is there. In the Grand River Valley there is a beginner’s “hiking classroom” that teaches identification of trees and edible plants. These guided hikes are 2-4 hours, using the Carolinian Forests as the classroom.

During the hike, the guides teach as they come across different plants and trees. On each plant they talk about how to identify, edible or medicinal values and other uses. Learning from these guides is very hands-on, with tasting, smelling and feeling included."

"The soft, large-diameter ripples were unusual on the cold, still water over at the western front at Humber Bay. But right then, there was a fresh ripple expanding from the bubbling that was slowly becoming visible on the water surface. And then, the red-necked grebe dove out of the water, literally spear-like thanks to its gorgeously sharp beak that is unlike most common waterfowl."
