PUNCH CANADA | TELL YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTION TO "TAKE A HIKE"

"This year, we'd like to provide your readers with a better approach to their New Years resolutions…  Escaping outdoors and embracing Ontario's winter wonderlands to help shed unwanted weight or kick-start your 2011 fitness plan.

Consider that on average, outdoor activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing burn 20 percent more calories than the treadmill.  With that in mind, it's time to stop wasting money on under-used gym memberships or exercise equipment and get outside where the health benefits are just as good - if not better."

Trails as part of Economic Development

Our department is looking into developing a separate website dedicated to economic development. I'd like to know the pros and cons and feedback if you do have a separate investment site.

We like to think our website on trails is one type of micro-site promoting overall economic development in Ontario. To follow this thread Join Linkedin, then join our group Economic Development Professionals.

You CAN get there from here - One Tank Trips - The Buffalo News

"St. Davids, on the southern edge of Niagara-on-the-Lake, is now home to the Ravine Vineyard and Olson Foods. Anna Olson, along with her husband Michael, a professor chef at the Niagara Culinary Institute, are owners of Olson Foods, a homestyle restaurant offering delectable edibles. The menu is filled with reasonably priced items that highlight fresh local ingredients and reflect Olson’s signature style.

Next door to the restaurant is the Woodruff House, a heritage home dating back to 1802, considered to be among the 50 most architecturally significant houses in Canada. It was first built as a log home in 1802, destroyed by fire in 1814, rebuilt, dismantled and rebuilt. The historic house is now the hospitality center of Ravine Vineyard, 1366 York Road, St. Davids, Ont.; www.ravinevineyard.com; (905) 262-8463."

County needs more snow before trails open - Minden Times - Ontario, CA

"Haliburton County's snowmobile trails remain closed, but that should change soon, hopefully, the president of the Haliburton County Snowmobile Association says.

Scott Doan says the county needs another six inches of snow before the trails will open.

'With the weather we've been having, everything is closed,' Doan said late last week.

The Haliburton County Rail Trail had been open to snowmobilers before last week's warm weather hit and the association has been out on the trails with its grooming equipment for some time."

Trailblazing ladies - The Barrie Examiner - Ontario, CA

"The last bastion of male bonding on the trails has hit a snag. Women are taking over the sport of snowmobiling.

Twenty years ago, Jody Sutton remembers riding on the back of her husband's sled as they whipped through the countryside.

'Now, women come in to buy their own sleds,' said the customer service representative at St. Onge Recreation on Hart Drive. 'Or they'll buy two: one for her and one for her husband.'"

Happy New Year 2011

Happy New year to all who like trails.

E-notes of the Toronto Bruce Trail Club

An opportunity to keep that New Year resolution to get more exercise, and walk off some of the excess of the night before! (Note the late start time.) Join us for the annual loop hike around the many paths and trails in the conservation area. Dogs permitted, but must be leashed. After the hike those who want to can repair to the Mohawk Inn for some of their delicious hot chocolate. We will have earned it.

Reflectons on the Outdoors- Happy New Year

For me this has been a year of rediscovery for the most part....a rediscovery of things that are important to me....particularly the outdoors....and especially the canoe. Over the past 12 months, I have reflected often on this blog about such things....I've seen this blog grow from a mere 216 views in the first month to over 3,700 this past month.....the highest number for a single day has been 273 back in October....and nearly 30.000 have viewed this blog.
