Always check ice before you head out - Northumberland Today - Ontario, CA

"This is where my mixed emotions come into play. The forecast for the next couple of days is calling for abnormally high temperatures and rain for our part of Ontario. If that comes true, and it sure looks and feels like it will, we won't have to worry about fighting deep snow until we get back to cooler, freezing weather again. I like that idea, simply because I like to zip around the lakes on my ATV and fish a variety of locations, which usually results in better catches, especially when an area gets too much fishing pressure as some locations are.

On the other hand, will we even be able to go ice fishing until the ice firms up again? Will the ice be safe enough to walk on, let alone drive on? Only time will tell, but you can bet I'll be checking the ice conditions thoroughly before I head out on it."

Stoked on Stokely skiing - thestar.com

"The three of us — Nordic skiers of varying levels — have stopped halfway through our 15-kilometre trek at the propane-heated Stokely Lake Cabin to eat lunch, swap ski stories and pose for pictures with fellow skiers. Pat, Carina and I have plans to press on to the legendary Norm’s Cabin on Bone Lake, where trapper Norm Bourgeois lived until his death last year. Maintained by the Algoma Highlands Nature Conservancy, the rustic cabin is filled with memorabilia and tea and cookies, awaiting famished skiers. But our aching quads demand our attention, so we head back to the trailhead under sunny, blue skies — and a few slippery slopes along the way."

BikeShow

The Toronto International Bicycle Show is continuing its tradition of staging the industry’s top annual spectacle while, at the same time, helping the environment and giving back to the community. As the industry’s No. 1 exclusive Canadian bicycle consumer show enters its 25th year, attendance figures are holding and more importantly, surveys indicate that 50% of visitors still purchase product at this show. Some 37% of visitors are 18-34 and 31% are 35 to 49 years of age, so the popularity of cycling is not restricted to any specific age group. The show is also a hit with young people – 13% who attended last year were 17 and under.
The show also gives back to the community. It sponsors BAM (Bicycle Assembly and Maintenance Program), donates BMX Ramps to the City of Toronto’s BMX Program and gives free space and show passes annually to 22 Ontario clubs and associations to promote recreational cycling."

Recreation trail planned - The Daily Observer - Ontario, CA

"COBDEN -A group is proposing a year-round recreat i o na l trail system for the Beachburg area.

Whitewater council has agreed to write a letter of suppor t for the Beachburg Off Road Cycling Association (BORCA), a not-for-profit organization seeking an Ontario Trillium Fund grant for the construction of single track trails around the village.

The association believes Beachburg's relatively close proximity to the city of Ottawa and the ongoing expansion of Highway 17 will result in an increase of city-sprawl in the area."

A sweet preview - Community Press - Ontario, CA

"It was a sweet outing for Grade 3 students at Percy Centennial Public School.

The children, dressed in colourful snowsuits, scrambled up and down a snow mountain, devoured pancakes drenched in maple syrup, sampled maple snow taffy and explored the woods in a horse-drawn sleigh last week at Sandy Flat Sugar Bush outside Warkworth.

Their activities were a foretaste of what is to come March 12 and 13, when the Warkworth Maple Syrup Festival celebrates a quarter century of drawing families from across Ontario and beyond to both the sugar bush and the village"
