Walking in the Don Valley Ravine « Spacing Toronto
"Toronto’s ravines are spaces of recreation in every sense of the word. The very term recreation has its roots in Latin meaning ‘to create anew’. The ravines are places we go to bike, walk, reflect, or experience natural space in an urban environment. Yet, from where I live in Toronto ‘natural space’ is often a destination rather than our everyday environments. Ravines and parks are created natural spaces that are separate from urban spaces and often in conflict with development. I experienced this interesting tension while on a Don Valley and Dales ravine walk with friends one Saturday afternoon."

New Options Coming For Pittsburgh Bicyclists - BikeRadar
"“This Plan shows how we can integrate walking, biking, and other active, healthy travel modes into our existing transportation system,” said county executive Dan Onorato. “Planning and prioritizing investments in commuter bike routes and walking facilities will enhance our transportation network and provide sustainable travel choices to move people to-and-from their destinations. The Active Allegheny plan is a blueprint for improved access and choices to connect people to communities, work sites, transit, schools, attractions and residences. By working together we can provide active transportation infrastructure to increase connectivity, sustainability and an enhanced quality of life for County residents.”"

Letters to the editor - The Whig Standard - Ontario, CA
"The work the CRCA has done this year to maintain the trails should be complimented and rewarded. It is indeed quite dismaying to read that CRCA has been pushed to reduce the budget for maintenance for the coming year. CRCA has one the best cross-country trails in Ontario, and we the skiing/taxpaying public would very much encourage you to go forward in enhancing our Kingston-area gem.
Any reduction in maintenance for grooming and brush cutting will increase the likelihood of possible liability and, of course, a concerning lack of respect for what has become a valuable component of Kingston's winter activities.
I previously wrote to the authority this winter about the cross-country ski trails, and now would encourage the CRCA to not cut back funding in this year and would ask the city to support that and restore the $4,000 in funding.

Bicycle Retailer and Industry News
"The Bicycle Trade Association of Canada (BTAC) is reporting that bicycle sales by independent bicycle dealers (IBDs) have surpassed a quarter of a billion dollars at retail value.
Janet O'Connell, the executive director of BTAC, said: 'Bicycling is one of the fastest growing recreational activities in Canada, and municipalities are increasingly embracing cycling as a mainstream mode of transportation as their citizens choose cycling for utilitarian and recreational purpose. The important contribution our vibrant bicycle industry makes to the Canadian economy represents an important argument, in addition to cycling's positive impact on health, the environment and congestion, for enhanced investments by governments at all levels.'"

Register A Canoe?-Canoeroots Magazine | Canadian Canoes, Canoeing Country, River Trips, Canoe Camping, Fishing
"OTTAWA—Canoeists and kayakers planning a traditional Canadian summer trip — including Scouts and Girl Guides on group excursions to explore a quiet lake — could now face a mountain of paperwork and a boat tax under new federal rules, critics charge.
Outdoor organizations are hopping mad over an overhaul of boating regulations they say has introduced a requirement for a federal licence for canoes and kayaks used in “guided excursions.”
“What I love about canoe tripping is that all you need is a boat, you need your (personal flotation device), your paddle and some water. It’s really simple ... we don’t need to make this complicated and I don’t want to have to register my canoe,” said Eoin Wood, director of Camp Wanapitei, a popular summer camp north of North Bay.
Transport Canada says it’s all a misunderstanding and insists there is no new requirement for registration."

Heritage Conference to be held June 3 to 5 - Northumberland Today - Ontario, CA
"Today's article will primarily focus on the Cobourg Heritage Committee, known as CHC. Congratulations to CHC, town staff -- in particular Stephen Ashton -- and town council for demonstrating exemplary practices in heritage conservation and promotion. Their vision enabled us to receive the 2010 Lieutenant Governor's Ontario Heritage Award for Community Leadership. The only other community to win this prestigious award was the City of Peterborough. The City of Brampton was recognized as an honorable mention.
Kudos as well to Malcolm Wardman and his committee members for co-ordinating and promoting the upcoming Ontario Heritage Conference 'Creating the Will' which will be held June 3 to 5 within our community. You are encouraged to visit cobourgtourism . ca/heritage and be an active participant as it will be an event to remember."

The Urban Country - Bicycles Are Transportation: Bicycles In Jamaica
"A friend recently returned from a trip to Jamaica and managed to snap some photos of everyday Jamaicans using bicycles for transportation in that island country. Bicycles are an economical and efficient way to get around, so it’s no wonder that some locals use bicycles to get themselves and their work gear from point A to point B.
On a similar note, there is a volunteer organization here in Toronto called “Bicycles Crossing Borders” that sends commuting bicycles over to Cuba to help Cubans improve their lives and spend more time with their family by reducing their commute times."

TheSpec - Buzz is building for 1812 bicentennial
"STONEY CREEK Few probably remember there was a maritime component to the Battle of Stoney Creek, but Gill Bibby does.
Following the pivotal battle in the War of 1812 on June 6, 1813 — which many say saved Upper Canada from being conquered — the Americans retreated towards the Niagara River. They camped along Forty Mile Creek, but were bombarded by a British fleet offshore in Lake Ontario commanded by Captain Sir James Yeo."

Benefit Sunday for ill teen - The Barrie Examiner - Ontario, CA
"A fundraiser will be held Sunday at Ol' West Wing restaurant in Barrie to benefit Adam Fedosoff.
The Innisdale Secondary School student, now 16, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 13. His family has focused on getting him better, which has included a nine-month stay at Ronald McDonald House in Toronto where he received an aggressive medical treatment.
When his situation started to improve, Fedosoff discovered road cycling and participated in the Tour For Kids Ontario last summer -- a four-day ride to help raise money to send children with cancer to camp.
Sunday's event, called 'Friends of Feddy Fundraiser', will include a silent auction and draws.
The event takes place from noon to 4 p.m. The restaurant is located at 201 Hurst Dr. For more information call 705-333-4677."

ATVs to be banned from city paths - The Whig Standard - Ontario, CA
"All-terrain vehicles will be banned on city multi-use paths, but horse riders and snowmobiles will get the green light under a staff-recommended policy.
The economic stimulus fund helped the city construct the Osgoode and Prescott-Russell rural pathways along former rail corridors. Councillors asked staff to look into the issue of motorized vehicles on the paths.
It turned out to be a lively deb at e, especially in Osgoode, where snowmobilers and residents clashed."

Bicycles a big part of county's transportation plans - SignOnSanDiego.com
"Transportation planners have proposed spending $2.58 billion building bicycle paths and improving streets for pedestrians in San Diego County over the next 40 years.
You read that right: billion.
San Diegans are accustomed to connecting “billion” with muscular highways, trains and bridges, not what planners term “active transportation.” For some, it’s long overdue."
A sound investment.
