The next step for legendary canoe - Barry's Bay This Week - Ontario, CA

"The famous (and famously immense) birch bark canoe built by Matt Bernard of the Pikwakanagan Algonquins of Golden Lake is about to undergo something of an existential crisis.

The canoe, which was commissioned in 1957 by David A. Gillies, a lumber magnate from Arnprior, as a replica of the huge canoes used in the early fur-trading years of Canada, and even earlier by the Indigenous peoples of the region, has spent more than half a century in the possession of various museums, and has been at home at the Canadian Museum of Civilization (CMC) in Gatineau, Quebec for several decades, alternately on display or in storage."

Hidden Trails | Vitality Magazine | Toronto Canada alternative health, natural medicine and green living

"Spring is a wonderful time to get out to explore in the forest. A soon as the ice melts off the lakes, we take some time to search for old, forgotten trails.

It was one of those wonderful spring afternoons – the lake calm, the sun high in the sky – that Allan and I scanned the shoreline from the canoe. We looked closely down at the map, up at the skyline of the forest, back down to the map and then to the shoreline once again. With practiced eyes, we could make a pretty good guess as to where the trail would most likely have begun."

The North Bay Nugget - Ontario, CA | UR

"The Ministry of Natural Resources is a public service. As such the Ministry and the politicians who are supposed to direct the Ministry need to pay attention to the concerns of the public. Endless cuts to MNR staff and budgets, locked doors on MNR offices, no gas for conservation officers trucks, land use plans that do not include local involvement, fisheries and wildlife management plans that do not use input from local expertise and the most glaring inadequacy… no public accountability"

The irony is, that these lands are the first part of any RTO strategy. They need to be well maintained.
