Ontario Trails News - Education Program Update

Ontario Trails Council Launches Comprehensive Trails Education Program

The Ontario Trails Council has embarked on a journey to develop a comprehensive trail education program in Ontario.

The project goal is to develop a series of thirteen educational modules geared to enhance the proficiency of volunteers and professionals engaged in the design, construction, and maintenance of all kinds of trails.

With financial assistance of the Ontario Trillium Foundation the OTC has retained the services of a full time education program coordinator to seek out individuals and organizations willing to volunteer their time to first develop curriculum in the thirteen areas of study, and secondly to offer the curriculum to volunteers and professionals involved in the field of trail design, construction, and maintenance.

We are currently in the process of drafting Requests for Proposals in each of the subject areas. Once the RFP’s have been finalized we will begin the process of actively pursuing potential program providers to solicit their proposals, and secure volunteer program instructors.

If anyone is either personally interested in any aspect of this project, or if you might know of an individual or organization that is interested please feel free to contact me.

Updates on the progress of our initiative will be posted on this site.

NEW TRAIL NEARS COMPLETION - Kawartha Conservation
Volunteers and staff made excellent headway on a new, sustainable trail in the southern end of Durham East Cross Forest Conservation Area on June 24. We are planning to complete the 4 km trail later this year, which will be opened to low-impact uses such as hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing.
We'd like to thank all of the participants for their help, including the Durham Mountain Biking Association.

Credit Valley Conservation Authority will be hosting a Beech Bark Disease Workshop led by OMNR forest pathologists Richard Wilson and John McLaughlin. The workshop is designed for forest managers, tree markers and other specialists interested in learning how to identify and reduce the impacts of Beech Bark Disease. In addition to learning how to identify the disease the workshop aims. August 30, 2011 Contact: Kata Bavrlic, M.Sc. Terrestrial Monitoring Specialist kbavrlic@creditvalleyca.ca
