MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE EVENT CALENDAR

Trail Education
Our event calendar shows weekly adjustments to our course offerings. This week we have added another date for Volunteer Management with Diana Smyth and adjusted out two courses from this current week.

In addition, we have added the new Trail Design Course detailed below. We have also taken calls from some folks wishing to take the Trails Marketing Course in Kingston October 18, 2012. Those seats were block purchased by RTO 9, what we could do is work with you to get another RTO 1-or 4- or 7? to purchase a block of seats so that folks can attend in those areas. Sorry for any confusion this may cause. Thank you.

Be sure to use our array of press or other flyers to circulate to your local papers or possible attendees. All available for use - call - 877-668-7245 or 519-941-8911, or 1-866-560-7783

Bruce Trail Day is an annual event celebrating Canada's oldest and longest footpath, hosted by the Bruce Trail Conservancy and each of its nine Bruce Trail Clubs.
Each Club of the Bruce Trail Conservancy is hosting free guided hikes and family activities to help you explore the Bruce Trail, discover the amazing variety of life along the Niagara Escarpment, and celebrate 50 years since the Bruce Trail began.
Fifty years ago, a phenomenal amount of work and effort was dedicated to mapping, clearing and blazing the Bruce Trail. This year we celebrate the first maps, the first blazes, the first Clubs, and all the work that went into putting the Bruce Trail on the ground and eventually led to its official opening in 1967.
Why not make this your year to (re)discover the Bruce Trail?
Come and learn about our year-round hiking programs, trail maintenance opportunities, and what we are doing to establish a conservation corridor from Niagara to Tobermory.

Chief Coroner Releases Pedestrian Death Review

September 19, 2012

Recommendations Aim to Prevent Pedestrian Deaths in Ontario

Dr. Andrew McCallum, Chief Coroner for Ontario, today released the Office of the Chief Coroner's Pedestrian Death Review.

The Pedestrian Death Review was undertaken as a result of concern surrounding the issue of pedestrian safety after a spate of deaths in January 2010. The purpose of the review was to examine the circumstances of 95 deaths that occurred from Jan. 1, 2010 to Dec. 31, 2010 and make recommendations to help prevent future deaths.

The review was led by Dr. Bert Lauwers, Deputy Chief Coroner, Inquests with help from stakeholders and members of the public, who contributed their comments. It resulted in 26 recommendations in the areas of leadership, legislation, education, engineering and enforcement. These include:
  • Creating a Walking Strategy for Ontarians
  • Adopting a 'complete streets' approach to guide the development of new communities and the re-development of existing communities in Ontario
  • Installing side guards on heavy trucks
  • Providing municipalities greater flexibility to adjust speed limits and create more pedestrian crossings
  • Educating drivers on the scenarios that can lead to a pedestrian collision
  • Increasing enforcement.

Ontario Helping Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph Protect the Great Lakes

September 19, 2012

Government Invests in Water Innovation

Ontario is helping Guelph, Waterloo and Kitchener test new and better ways to protect groundwater and streams that flow into Lake Erie.

The Guelph Transit Facility is installing a rainwater and rinse water collection system to reduce the amount of water, detergent and energy used to wash city buses. The new system will also prevent detergent from entering local waterways.

The City of Waterloo is installing a rainwater collection system to collect, treat, store and reuse stormwater runoff from building rooftops and parking lots and the City of Kitchener is exploring new ways to keep stormwater sediment out of landfills by reusing it as topsoil.

These projects are part of the McGuinty government's Showcasing Water Innovation program that supports projects demonstrating new and cost-effective approaches to improving drinking water, wastewater treatment and stormwater systems.

Protecting and restoring the Great Lakes is part of the Ontario government's plan to enhance quality of life for Ontario families and ensure a strong, green economy for future generations.
