TORONTO – Police are investigating a fatal accident at Blue Mountain resort after a man in his 50s died on a mountain bike trail.
A Blue Mountain spokesperson told Global News that the death occurred Saturday when the 58-year-old man was found on the Haole Trail at 5:30 p.m.
Attempts were made to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim, who hasn’t been identified, was an avid and experienced mountain biker, according to a resort official.

Another very important meeting to highlight the need for mountain bikers to voice their wish for mountain biking (think Bike Park) to be included in the master plan.

The City of Toronto is hosting a public meeting where you can learn more about the Beare Road Park Master Plan project, and provide your input on its new Master Plan.
We invite you to join us at the first public meeting.

Date: Thursday, October 11, 2012

Time: 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Location: Blessed Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School, 40 Sewells Road, Toronto, ON M1B 3G5

At the meeting on October 11, the Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation project team will give a presentation that includes background information about the site and the existing conditions. Parks Canada will also be at the meeting to provide an update on the neighbouring proposed Rouge National Urban Park and their consultation process.

The City of Toronto will specifically be seeking feedback regarding the vision that users and residents have for the park, guiding principles that should influence park design, and the consultation process. Other public meetings will follow as the plan progresses.

The venue is wheelchair accessible. Please request any additional accommodations necessary when you RSVP. We look forward to meeting with you.

This ride traverses Southern Ontario departing from Oakville and arriving over 180 km later in Beaver Valley.

Riders in the "Beaver Valley 180" recognize their good fortunes and the importance of supporting others in their goals.  This ride began with 5 guys having fun and is now an event with over 70 elite riders supporting Special Olympics Ontario athletes in order that they may realize their dreams.
  
The BV180 continues to support The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics athletes in order that they may realize their dreams. The Law Enforcement Torch Run is  the most important fundraising entity for Special Olympics programs around the WORLD. In the four years has raised over $430,000. The goal for 2012 is $130,000.

Chief Coroner Releases Pedestrian Death Review

Recommendations Aim to Prevent Pedestrian Deaths in Ontario

Dr. Andrew McCallum, Chief Coroner for Ontario, today released the Office of the Chief Coroner's Pedestrian Death Review.

The Pedestrian Death Review was undertaken as a result of concern surrounding the issue of pedestrian safety after a spate of deaths in January 2010. The purpose of the review was to examine the circumstances of 95 deaths that occurred from Jan. 1, 2010 to Dec. 31, 2010 and make recommendations to help prevent future deaths.

The review was led by Dr. Bert Lauwers, Deputy Chief Coroner, Inquests with help from stakeholders and members of the public, who contributed their comments. It resulted in 26 recommendations in the areas of leadership, legislation, education, engineering and enforcement. These include:
  • Creating a Walking Strategy for Ontarians
  • Adopting a 'complete streets' approach to guide the development of new communities and the re-development of existing communities in Ontario
  • Installing side guards on heavy trucks
  • Providing municipalities greater flexibility to adjust speed limits and create more pedestrian crossings
  • Educating drivers on the scenarios that can lead to a pedestrian collision
  • Increasing enforcement.

Government Invests in Water Innovation

Ontario is helping Guelph, Waterloo and Kitchener test new and better ways to protect groundwater and streams that flow into Lake Erie.  

The Guelph Transit Facility is installing a rainwater and rinse water collection system to reduce the amount of water, detergent and energy used to wash city buses. The new system will also prevent detergent from entering local waterways.

The City of Waterloo is installing a rainwater collection system to collect, treat, store and reuse stormwater runoff from building rooftops and parking lots and the City of Kitchener is exploring new ways to keep stormwater sediment out of landfills by reusing it as topsoil.

These projects are part of the McGuinty government's Showcasing Water Innovation program that supports projects demonstrating new and cost-effective approaches to improving drinking water, wastewater treatment and stormwater systems.

Protecting and restoring the Great Lakes is part of the Ontario government's plan to enhance quality of life for Ontario families and ensure a strong, green economy for future generations.
