"...council has clearly stated in its policies and vision for the city, cycling policy is there to encourage people to use their bikes as an alternative to cars. It is not about sport or hobbies, but about making it possible to get around town safely."
It's a sport with significant positive personal health and public environment benefits - a pillar of the Provincial Trails Strategy (2007), which communities don't enact because local councils don't usually get the necessary funds to do so.
The Ontario Trails Council is a registered charity, led by volunteers who promote the development, management, use and conservation of Ontario's trails. You'll find everything from gentle walking trails to rock faces for climbing and water routes to canoe and kayak. Cycle Toronto: Cyclists Beware! Two-Week Police Ticketing Bonanza Coming to Toronto in September.
"I'm all for road safety, but I'm not sure that a city-wide ticketing blitz by the Toronto Police is the best way to achieve it. According to a recent Toronto Star article:
Police handed out more than 400 tickets to cyclists and pedestrians in a three-day safety blitz in the area between the DVP and Victoria Park Ave. and south of Eglinton Ave. W. Police cautioned an additional 250 people on bike and foot leading up to the blitz."

Friends of Rushing River could use volunteers - Kenora Daily Miner and News - Ontario, CA
"Friends of Rushing River is a non-profit charitable organization that has been working since 1991 to help preserve Rushing River's natural heritage. They are mandated by Ontario Parks to provide natural heritage projects and education for the park.
In the recent past, the organization has mapped out and cleared several canoe routes on Dogtooh Lake that run into Rushing River Park. They have also worked on a five-kilometre hiking trail that runs through the park. The group holds a couple barbecues at the campground each summer and just had their final one in mid-August."
"Friends of" would be more sustainable if they and Ontario Parks branched into working with ALL trail users in a managed way - Ontario Parks doesn't even link to Ontario Trails on its park pages - what is that about anyway?

Share the road, four-wheelers told | Columnists | News | London Free Press
"In Ontario, we have laws that state bicyclists have the same rights as other users of the road. In Toronto, we have provincial politicians considering a new law (Bill 74) that would require motorists to give cyclists a wide berth. And in London, we have “sharrows” to remind drivers to share the road with two-wheelers.
But none of that alters the reality of what happens when somebody driving a 4,000-pound car hits somebody pedalling a bike.
Last week that point was hammered home, once again, when a woman was seriously injured (her critical condition later improved) when she was struck from behind by an SUV along Hyde Park Rd., just north of 10 Mile Rd."

"The push is on to bring a high-tech bike-share program to Hamilton.
But the plan can't get out of first gear if Hamiltonians won't buy in.
So the city's Smart Commute is hosting a public demonstration of a couple of systems tomorrow at City Hall."

A Call to Pedals Savings Cycle
"Have you signed up for BIXI yet? If not, consider this: paying $100 for your 2011 Membership to BIXI may be the loudest vote you can cast this year for better cycling in Toronto. With the mayoral election shaping up to be a bit frightening for the cycling populace as most of the front runners seem completely at ease with pandering to the drivers in town, talking about tearing up or painting over bike lanes, or stopping the cycling infrastructure plan completely, this is truly our chance to show that we are committed to making cycling a safe choice in this city. As of yesterday, there were approximately 450 BIXI sign-ups…nearly halfway to the 1000 membership goal outlined by the city."

City to extend Pace Way - The North Bay Nugget - Ontario, CA
"The city is moving ahead with its plan to extend the Kate Pace Way along Booth Road.
Council approved $1.3 million in spending Monday for work to get underway in a matter of weeks. The project, which will extend the popular recreational trail from Marshall Avenue along Booth Road to Lakeshore Drive, was originally expected to include milling and resurfacing of Booth Road between Birchs Road and Lakeshore. But costs were higher than anticipated after tenders were received."
