timestranscript.com - Camping is tops for physical activity and interaction with nature - Breaking News, New Brunswick, Canada

"According to the 2009 Active Healthy Kids Canada report card, Canadian children and youth received a failing grade for physical activity levels. With kids spending as much as six hours a day online, playing video games and watching television, parents should be making a conscious effort to get themselves and their children outside to increase their levels of physical activity.

A family camping trip is a great way to not only be active with fun activities like hiking, canoeing and swimming but it is also a way to address the nature deficient behaviours that urban children in particular experience when they do not have opportunities to connect with our natural environment," says Dr. Mark Tremblay, director of healthy active living and obesity research at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and chief scientific officer of Active Healthy Kids Canada. That's a real shame in a country like Canada that prides itself on its access to the world's biggest and most interesting playground - nature."

ATVs destroy trail at marsh - Owen Sound Sun Times - Ontario, CA

"Editor:

I was recently hiking along the Bruce Trail where it crosses Bognor Marsh and was dismayed to see the devastation caused by ATVs along the north side of the marsh.

This whole stretch of footpath is now a disaster for walking with huge ruts and long stretches of mud and puddles.

Do these ATV machines have any merit whatsoever?

Love Your Mother | Canoe & Kayak Magazine

"Kevin Callan never imagined that one woman’s love of canoeing in pristine Ontario wilderness areas would create a global movement to clean up and rediscover “lost” canoe routes.

Callan, a well-known Canadian canoeist and author of 12 canoeing and camping guidebooks, is organizing the fifth annual Great Wilderness Clean-up this weekend. The grassroots event started in 2006 when Nancy Maddock and friends collected over 100 bags of garbage on Mother’s Day weekend on popular canoe routes in Algonquin Provincial Park, a heavily used canoe-tripping area north of Toronto. Word spread through the canoeing community on web forums and Callan got involved and implored other paddlers to clean up their favorite canoe areas. Last year, Callan says the two-day event had more support in England, Scotland and Brazil than in Canada; it also mobilized a number of canoe route clean-up efforts in the United States."

There was even a handful of outrigger canoes, that participated in their own timed race - a first for the Ontario Marathon Canoe Racing Association.

Distances ranged from 8K, to a full 24 km - for those competing for points in the standings, and hoping to qualify for the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships."

What’s in a name? For Robert Bateman, a park - Post City Magazines - June 2010 - Toronto, Ontario

"Wildlife painter Robert Bateman spent his childhood playing along an old railway line that decades later would officially become a naturalized trail called the Kay Gardner Beltline Park.

Redemption and the courier’s dad - The Globe and Mail

"Last fall, after the catastrophic Toronto encounter between Michael Bryant and bicycle courier Darcy Allan Sheppard, I wrote a column lamenting the swift intervention by the PR firm Navigator on Mr. Bryant’s behalf. I also said we’d started to learn about Mr. Sheppard, and that he was the product of a “failed adoption,” plus much foster care.

Soon afterward, I got a letter from an Edmonton man describing himself as “an enthusiastic reader,” and the adoptive father of Darcy Allan Sheppard. His name was Allan Sheppard. He said he found my piece “insightful” but “there is one reference you might want to reconsider.” It was “failed adoption.”"

Coyle: Michael Bryant a wiser man after tragedy - thestar.com

"Much nonsense has been spouted in recent days. Some have said the dropping of charges against Bryant declares open season on cyclists. Others talk of a war on cyclists. The comments are as ridiculous as they are unhelpful.

If there’s a lesson in this story, it is in the cost of untreated addiction and mental health needs – the story of a man whose pattern of conduct (if the ghastly consequence of an appallingly difficult life) pretty much assured him a date with a jail cell, or an early coffin, or as the star in someone else’s tragedy.

It’s a story about the destructive – and often self-destructive – consequences of rage. The prisons are full of people who lost it for 28 seconds, or even less."
