Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority Issues Flood Safety Bulletin :: NorthumberlandView.ca :: A View Like No Other

"The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority advises residents that a low pressure system will be moving through Southern Ontario beginning Tuesday morning.  Precipitation amounts of 20-50mm are forecast to fall before the system pushes out of the region on Wednesday.

If the current forecast holds, our region may experience periods of heavy rainfall and significant runoff to streams and rivers.  While higher than normal stream flows are expected, no flooding is anticipated at this time.  Under these conditions, stream banks and slopes will become slippery and dangerous.  The GRCA is advising watershed residents to use extreme caution around bodies of water and stay well back of stream banks and flowing water.  Please alert any children in your care of these dangers."

Mad River Canoe: A Huck Finn Journey in Southern Ontario

"You don't have to travel miles to get a wilderness experience. You can get up in the morning... drive an hour or so... and then there you are... out on a river doing it! But best of all... you can be in your own bed at night. This is an inexpensive day trip with minimum traveling... what could be better?

Take a guided rafting trip on the Grand River near Paris, Ontario to experience one of the best learning adventures around. You can travel down the river in total safety... paddling skills aren't required... size and age doesn't matter... and you can be right in the middle of it all... without getting wet!

On these rafting trips you can shoot the splash of swifts or leisurely float across pools. Everyone can jump out and swim when they want, even drink from freshwater springs."

Stories from the Trail » TCT and Parks Canada Host Trail Roundtable

"From November 23-25, Trans Canada Trail and Parks Canada brought together 49 trail community stakeholders for the National Trail Leadership Roundtable.
This event, held in Banff, Alberta, provided a forum to discuss the future of trail development, management and sustainability in Canada. The participants from across Canada identified common areas of agreement and challenges, and the need for increased collaboration, including a forum for future discussion.
A working group was formed to move the discussions forward and engage the national trail community. A report will be developed outlining the discussions, including a more detailed account of the issues and next steps.  It will be circulated to Roundtable participants and the trail community, and will be posted on TCT’s website."

We hope this effort produces some tangible results - Ontario well represented.

ATV'ers - Ontario Conditions

"I lost a trail through conservation property today. Nothing to do with snowmobilers/horsey riders/nature seekers/cyclist or bird watchers. We're all good. Lost it due to ATV's. Or to be more specific, 'what if ATV's start using this trail?'
ATV damage at present...nope but in several other areas of our trail system , yes.
Actually we lost (gave it up) another trail two weeks ago due to ATV/mud truck damage.
This one had no damage or threat of.
Oh, did I mention the possible rare/threatened fern they found yesterday.
So lose intersection 64 north to 62 and east to 48 off our trails..just the start of changes
intersection 122 has moved 2 km west, trail re-route to south and north

During my conversation with the land use property mgr from the conservation authority I was advised of the serious nature of the situation in our area. The Wiarton Trailblazers have one of the most scenic views in this end of the world (Skinners Bluff) and due to ATV infridgement and damage the Wiarton club might lose this trail.

There is a trend here - write the OFATV and the EOTA, they work with ATV'rs in the affected area. OTC works with Conservation Ontario to try and save riding areas in conjunction with conservation land managers.

Regulatory over-kill - ever try to build a trail?

"Management of Ontario’s land planning system is assigned to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH) under the Provincial Policy Statement which, in turn, awards Planning Act veto power to the incumbent Minister of that agency. The Ministries of Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources each maintain separate land planning departments as well but their policies can be modified or silenced by MMAH Ministerial order, an open-ended license in which Ontario land use planning is ultimately left to the discretion of a single individual.

To this administrative muddle are added interventions of sub-agencies like Ontario’s 36 Conservation Authorities and numerous Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). When promoting private property restrictions the latter faction, professional lobbyists often funded by the Ontario government, invariably claim “stakeholder” status."

Ever try to build a trail? - E-Mail your MPP tell them you 1) want a Trails Act and 2) that you support the Ontario Trails Strategy to get focus through the Ministry of Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation so we can reduce this regulatory process so it's effective and sensible. Thanks

Snowmobile Trails closed due to ATV's

Dear Editor,

Once again it's time to think about preparing snowmobile trails for the coming season.

Unfortunately, we have a problem this winter. Because of illegal trespassing activities by ATV riders, landowners have permanently closed the Bluewater Snomobile Club trail from Sobeys to Intersection 321.

This closure affects the snowmobilers from the centre and south end of Kincardine. It also has a large impact on businesses servicing trail users, including Holiday Inn Express, Tim Hortons, Boston Pizza, Crossroads Esso, McDonald's and Best Western Governor's Inn.

Many may say, "Just reroute the trail," but the Bluewater Snowmobile Club and the OFSC work very hard to gain permission to cross landowners' property. This is done by contacting the landowner, obtaining signed permission to cross the property, insuring the landowner against property damage and agreeing to removal of trail at the season's end.

We ask all ATV'rs to ATV Smart -

Go Snowmobiling Week - On Now!

Dave Phillips, senior climatologist for Environment Canada, says Ontario snowmobilers can look forward to a good winter, and that forecast sets the celebratory tone for Get Ready to Go Snowmobiling Week which runs from November 22 to 28. This annual launch of winter by the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) invites Ontarians to discover the many social, health and recreational benefits of snowmobiling, including the world’s largest recreational trail system.

As its name implies, Get Ready to Go Snowmobiling Week is also the cue for OFSC snowmobilers to start making ride plans and preparing sleds and gear. Sled dealers and snowmobile clubs across Ontario are marking Get Ready to Go Snowmobiling Week with open houses and other special events. Get Ready to Go Snowmobiling Week is also the last full week for purchasing Seasonal Snowmobile Trail Permits at the pre-Dec. 1 fee of $200. Permits can be bought online at www.ofsc.on.ca.

HCIA meets to discuss progress on trails agenda

It all began in 2007 when Headwaters Communities in Action (HCIA) identified five priorities vital to the development of the area’s trails system.

Now three years later, the HCIA Trails Working Group met at the Community Living Dufferin (CLD) building in East Garafraxa on Nov. 13, to gain a sense of the progress that’s been made.

“Some of the priorities have moved really well. They are really taking care of themselves,” explained Chris Broom, chair of the HCIA working trails group. “Do we need to look at other things? That is where we are right now — evaluating what our next set of priorities will be.”

Those original five priorities, including the creation of a link from Island Lake Conservation Area to Orangeville, a trail around that conservation area, a rail trail from Orangeville to Shelburne, developing cycling lanes in Dufferin County, as well as crafting a trailway from Island Lake to Terra Cotta, are beginning to take shape.

Cycle Toronto: Think Bike Workshop No. 2

"Way back in September I attended the Think Bike workshop at the El Mocambo and posted a blog entry about all the great ideas that our friends from the Netherlands had for our fair city.

The Dutch bicycle/city planners teamed up with Torontonians and city hall folk to create plans for redesigning Sherbourne St. and setting out a plan for a downtown bike lane network."

Belleville Police - Bicycle Safety

"Do I have to wear a bicycle helmet while riding on the road?
Yes. If you are under the age of 18, you are required by law to wear an approved bicycle helmet when traveling on any public road.
Cyclists over 18 years of age are encouraged to wear helmets for their own safety, but are not required by law.

Why was the bicycle helmet law introduced?
Research shows that helmets can be extremely effective in preventing head injuries. About three-quarters of all cycling fatalities involve head injuries. The Government of Ontario is committed to promoting cycling safety.

What is the fine for not wearing a helmet?
The fine is $60.00 with court costs of $5.00 and a victim fine surcharge of $15.00 = $80.00 for a plea of guilty."

atv accident statistics in ontario « Ottawa Personal Injury Lawyer, David Hollingsworth www.ottawainjury.ca

"There are several suggestions for preventing ATV accidents:

Attend an ATV driver’s safety course
Never use a 3-wheeler as they are unsafe and no longer manufactured
Ride an age-appropriate ATV.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that no one under the age of 16 ride a full size ATV
Provide constant supervision when children are operating an ATV
Never carry passengers.  ATVs are designed for only one person
Do not use ATVs on the streets or at night
Always wear an approved, well-fitting helmet with eye protection
Wear non-ski, closed toe shoes
Wear long pants and long sleeves
Never operate an ATV under the influence of drugs or alcohol."

Northerners can take a hike - Timmins Daily Press - Ontario, CA

"The Ministry of Natural Resources is responding to reports from residents in Northern Ontario that access to various pieces of Crown land is being restricted to benefit tourist outfitters.

'I've seen some of the emails and letters we've been getting about this, and people should be aware that they can still access the Crown land by hiking or portaging,' said Minister of Natural Resources Linda Jeffrey, during a telephone interview on Tuesday.

'We want people to fish and hunt in these areas, but we're restricting access by motorized vehicles.'
She added part of the allure of Northern Ontario lies in its remoteness.

'People like the fact that it's quiet, and it's a little harder to get to."

Recession-Weary Travellers Find Affordable Cottage Escapes Close to Home - PR.com

"When it comes time for a special winter getaway, Ontario travellers are choosing to save money by staying close to home and experiencing the delights of their own province. Sand Lake Cottages & Inn near Algonquin Park and Muskoka has seen a positive impact from the recent recession. “A large number of inquiries are coming from people that don't normally rent Ontario cottages but want to try a less expensive holiday close to home,” says Danette Evely, owner of Sand Lake Cottages & Inn. Rather than visit other provinces or countries, travellers are reducing their costs by booking private cottage rentals and Ontario cottage resorts closer to home."

Wildlife Gets A Lift From The W. Garfield Weston Foundation

"The Wildlife Conservation Society Canada announced today it has received a two-year grant from The W. Garfield Weston Foundation that will help fund continued conservation efforts in two of Canada’s most pristine, yet imminently threatened, northern regions — Ontario’s Far North and Northern British Columbia/Southern Yukon.

Working in these priority landscapes since 2002, WCS Canada’s conservation efforts have focused on vulnerable wildlife such as caribou, wolverines, and freshwater fish. With the Foundation’s previous support, WCS has succeeded in building conservation partnerships and integrating research findings into land use and species recovery outcomes in these priority regions."

Google Maps Adds Cycling Directions In Canada - BikeRadar

"Users in nine major Canadian cities which have shared data with Google will be able to bring up details of bike paths and cycle lanes, while cyclists in the rest of the country will be steered towards roads that have lighter traffic. Riders can opt to avoid big hills or find short cuts.

The cities that will have enhanced cycle mapping are: Calgary, Edmonton, Gatineau, Kelowna, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Waterloo and Winnipeg. As with the US launch, Google want people to use their reporting tool to flag up any errors or suggest bike routes. The feature is due to launch later this week"

MTV digs into the car/bike animosity on Vicious Cycle | I Bike Toronto

"In a very quick discussion, MTV's Vicious Cycle forum skims over a bunch of issues around cyclists and drivers sharing the road. By the end it feels like they've managed to mention all the issues and stereotypes without actually engaging on any of them. I do like the argument partway through between the courier and the taxi driver when the taxi driver claims to know as much about cycling as courier because he bikes about 3 times a month - precious. What we've learned:
cyclists: angry
motorists: scared
we all need to pay attention (oh really?! I wish I had thought of that already)
bike lanes are cheap
there's no political will (or even a very active backlash)
we're supposed to 'share the road' (whatever that means: do we share it according to need or want?)
Sunny is a funny, crazy bike courier (love her quote about putting the safety on the gun before going out on the road)
Admirable that MTV is tackling this just before winter - usually the media dredges up the war of bikes versus cars in the spring."

Wilderness Canoe Trips: Encounters with the Wildlife of Central Ontario

"One of the best things about a canoe is its ability to glide silently across the water. This helps us in many ways while trying to locate and observe the many mammals, birds, reptiles and Amphibians that make their home in central Ontario. One of the most memorable and exciting times on one of our canoe trips is being able to observe these wild creatures in their natural setting. Imagine watching a bull moose feeding on aquatic plants next to a meandering stream, a mature Bald Eagle as it soars gracefully over an open lake or the ‘haunting’ call of a loon as it echoes across an unnamed lake before dawn. Seeing these animals and many others in the wild creates memories and emotions within us that will stay with us for the rest of our lives."

Durham Trails make living great

Pickering has its own Waterfront Trail, complete with a boardwalk, beach volleyball and a water park. There is a nautical village, brimming with boutique shops and restaurants and great fishing, boating and water activities at Frenchman’s Bay.

Further east, Ajax is known for its Lake Ontario waterfront at Rotary Park, which boats a 150-acre greenspace with walking and biking trails and playgrounds. In Oshawa, local residents can enjoy the shoreline trails at Second March and McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve. Whitby is home to one of Lake Ontario’s finest harbours, the Port Whitby Marina, and also offers scenic trails along the waterfront.

In Clarington, the Lake Ontario Waterfront Trail stretches 17 km. Port of Newcastle is a self-contained village-like community with Cape Cod-inspired home designs, a marina, tennis courts and a clubhouse. The community is just minutes from the shops and restaurants of the Village of Newcastle, north of Highway 401.

In addition to Lake Ontario, Durham offers Lake Scugog and the town of Port Perry, located north of Townline Road. The town has a waterfront park and farmers’ market, and there is great fishing and boating at Lake Scugog. Residents are within minutes of the waterfront and several community events that take place there each year.

Charges against naked walker dropped

"[Some members of the community] might not think it's appropriate, or they might think it's not moral, but it's not indecent in the sense that it causes anybody any harm," said the man's Toronto-lawyer Gleb Bazov.

The man was initially also charged with nudity in a public place but that charge was withdrawn earlier this year.

Bazov said the court's decision sets an important precedent.

"It is a landmark case in the sense that the law has been applied to nudists and naturists. Now there is a clear pronouncement that a naturist is not engaging in an indecent act."

Ontario Professional Planners Institute recognizes Oakville Planning

“Council’s vision for Oakville is to be the most livable town in Canada and so how we manage growth in our town is a priority in reaching that goal,” said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

“Our planning services staff met the challenge to create a new official plan that truly expresses the vision our community has for carefully controlled growth. These awards acknowledge that hard work and we are appreciative of the recognition.”

The policies for the Kerr Village plan were built on years of revitalization planning, the community vision from the 2004 Kerr Village Revitalization Study and extensive consultation with neighbourhood residents and business owners.

The North Oakville Secondary Plans Implementation Strategy includes a completely new set of standards and procedures that address zoning, urban design, roads, transit, parking, trails, sustainability and parks.

Sarnia-Lambton to develop Heritage District

"Lambton County could soon be home to Ontario's first working industrial heritage conservation district.

A county council standing committee voted today to back creation of the district covering historic oil fields straddling Oil Springs and Enniskillen Township.

Under the Ontario Heritage Act, the district would give the two local councils power to preserve important physical features — such as jerker lines and pump houses — remaining from the the birth of North America's oil industry.

The proposal goes to county council Nov. 24."

YorkRegion Article: First steps in pathway to link pond, park

"A pathway connecting Toogood Pond and Bob Hunter Memorial Park is in the works as part of Markham's cycling and pathways and trails master plans.

The project has evolved from a multi-use pathway connecting the western and eastern reaches within the Milne Dam Conservation Park to extend west-east from Toogood Pond to the Rouge Park trails and the crossings of the Rouge River.

'It's a long route with multiple interests,' the town's director of engineering, Alan Brown, said.

He said where the pathway would end at Bob Hunter park and any property acquisition will be looked at later.

Deputy Mayor Jack Heath described the project as 'one of the most exciting things' council will work on next year."

GuelphMercury.com - Life - Teens take ‘canoe trip on wheels’

"Multi-day canoe trips and more modest overnight bicycle trips have long been staples offered to students in the outdoor education program at Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute. However, teachers Paul Denoon and Wade Schwark recognized the timing was right to ratchet up the time spent on bicycles.

In previous years, Denoon said, a rental truck carrying all necessary camping gear would meet the students for the evening. It was agreed this year — to provide the additional satisfaction gained from independent travel — the students would pull all the required gear for three days and two nights of cycling. “It is the equivalent of a canoe trip on wheels,” Denoon said. Cargo trailers would be the beasts of burden.

Katie Gad, another Centennial teacher, with the inspirational off-site Community Environmental Leadership Program known as CELP, referred her colleagues to Wike Trailers on Regal Road in Guelph."

CyclingMagazine.ca » Peterborough and the Kawarthas, Ontario

"Whether you’re looking for wide-open countryside vistas on a road ride, undulating free flowing singletrack, or maybe a loop around one of the many small lakes in the area, Peterborough County offers enough diversity to put a smile on any rider’s face. The rolling drumlin style hills make for great cycling while showcasing the beautiful views and pleasant weather of the summer and early fall months.

The city of Peterborough is located 140 km east of Toronto and 200 km west of Kingston. Peterborough County consists of several smaller surrounding towns including Lakefield and Apsley to the north and Norwood, Havelock and Douro to the east. The roads in and around the city are well maintained. Motorists in the area are used to seeing spandex clad cyclists spread over the countryside and are generally considerate when overtaking small and large groups of riders. The Peterborough County Cycling Map does an excellent job of highlighting the best roads to ride. The map was a recent project by a group of local cyclists and the result is a well-designed tool that highlights the major information for riders such as road surface, climbs, traffic activity and rail trails in the area. Copies are available at the Kawartha tourism office, many information stations and at local bike shops."

Millennium Trail expansion - Niagara Falls Review - Ontario, CA

"Another section of the Millennium Trail, stretching 1.4-kilometres along the Hydro Canal connecting Morrison St. to Thorold Stone Rd., is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.

The $370,000-budgeted project, funded equally by the municipal, provincial and federal government through an infrastructure fund, provides a multi-use paved trail for people to walk, cycle, jog and rollerblade in the city's natural green spaces and corridors.

Sustainable Cobourg offers cycling plan initiatives - Northumberland Today - Ontario, CA

"COBOURG -- A detailed cycling plan from Sustainable Cobourg, if adopted under Cobourg's Transportation Master Plan, could make Cobourg a cycling destination, its members say.

The two-part, 50-page submission provides an overview, complete with a map, building on existing cycle routes, including the Waterfront Trail.

It includes specific proposals for the following:
* Installation of Share-the-Road signs;

* Conversion of arterial roads using Road Diet design;

* Adding bike lanes;

* Identification of 'hot spots'; and

* Conducting a study for additional bicycle parking,' states the group's document.

'Our proposals are low-cost -- for the most part just signage and paint -- and will transform Cobourg into one of the most cyclable (safe, efficient, from anywhere to anywhere) towns in Ontario, if not North America!'"

TheSpec - QEW walkway provides missing link between city’s...

"From its clay-red hue to its slanted steel arch, the new pedestrian bridge spanning the QEW and Red Hill Creek was designed to reflect the city and capture its unique character.

And in just a few weeks, Hamiltonians will be able to see the city’s new landmark firsthand, as construction on the project wraps up.

“The community has been waiting a long time for this,” said Marco Oddi, senior project manager for the public works department. “Hamilton has some wonderful trail systems and this was always the missing link.”

Unlike other areas of the city, such as Cootes Paradise and Dundas, the heavily industrial east end has long been alienated from green space, separated from the Lake Ontario waterfront by old landfills and a tangle of high-speed roadways."

Cyclists not impressed with roundabout - Northumberland Today - Ontario, CA

"COBOURG -- Cyclists who are members of Sustainable Cobourg have informed the Town of Cobourg they are not happy with the new roundabout on D'Arcy Street.

'We have expressed our displeasure,' Rick Nonnekes told Northumberland Today.

He is the president of Sustainable Cobourg.

'It's another example where they don't talk to us,' added cyclist and Sustainable Cobourg member Richard Tyssen.

At issue, say the cyclists, is that there is no way for them to ride through the roundabout, such as with a cycle lane. The only option available is to get off their bikes, they said."

ATV riders suspended - The Sarnia Observer - Ontario, CA

"Police are reminding local motorists that ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) are not permitted on county roadways for recreational use, after a pair of three-day suspensions were handed out in St. Clair Township over the weekend.

Lambton OPP say officers stopped two ATVs traveling on Hill Street in Corunna near the railroad tracks, Sunday evening.

It was determined that the two male operators had been drinking and both showed a 'warn' on a roadside breath test."

Rattray Marsh « The Lake Ontario waterfront trail

"It was a nice sunny morning. Sometimes watching a huge body of water glisten makes that realization set in a little differently. The trip to Rattray Marsh offered me my first glimpse of Lake Ontario.

The wooded area itself felt like a dry thicket. No smell of moisture in the soil. Somehow, having grown up in India, the idea of a marsh is like the mangroves of the Sunderbans in West Bengal. Humid, oppressive. Five foot-tall trees with expanded umbrellas of juicy, green leaves. Not like the Rattray Marsh. Here, it was warm, hot even, but breezy. No indication of moisture hung in the air. Tall, relatively thin-stumped trees, with dry branches jutting out in random directions before getting lost in the leafy confines of a neighbouring tree. And the forest floor covered in broken logs, ferns, and other grasses of varying heights."

County Cycling Trails, Welcome Cyclists, ATV and Snowmobile Trails- Eastern Ontario

"The County Trails - The County Trails in Lennox and Addington include nearly 600 kilometers of looping routes where you never retrace your path, yet are able to end where you began. While you explore these trails you experience the history, natural beauty, and serenity of the heart of the Land O' Lakes tourist region.
Stretching northward from the shore of Lake Ontario, the County Trails are well-maintained on county and select local roadways. As you travel, you will pass through rolling landscapes, towns, villages, and historical destinations commemorating the settlements of the United Empire Loyalists. You will see farmland where cattle graze, then minutes later witness a quick transition to rugged Canadian Shield. Evergreen and granite blend to offer the beauty that the Canadian Group of Seven artists painted over and over again.
Some trails are more challenging than others but all of our trails are well marked, easily accessible, and promise to be exciting. Whether you are in your car, walking, biking, or in-line skating, The County Trails are an ideal getaway for anyone seeking a day-long or extended excursion."

Off-leash dogs worry Quinte Conservation - Belleville Intelligencer - Ontario, CA

"Quinte Conservation is concerned about off-leash dogs at the Belleville non-profit organization conservation area, said general manager Terry Murphy.

The area is home to the popular Pooch Path -a 0.6-kilometer off-leash trail. Murphy said dogs must be leashed in the parking lot and on the other six kilometres of the trail.

'Dog owners who don't leash their pets in the parking lot and on the trails are making it very dangerous for other users of the Conservation Area,' said Murphy. 'Off-leash dogs have been a problem around the parking lot and office as well as on hiking trails. We've had recent complaints that large off-leash dogs are frightening other users of the trails.'"

OTC says - keep your dogs on a leash, unless you are in a solely dedicated dog park.

Sudbury Sports News - Larry Berrio brings spotlight to snowmobiling in Sudbury

"Larry Berrio has been an avid snowmobiler for as long as he can remember. He can remember times in the past when Sudbury was a mecca of snowmobiling activity.

However, in the past decade, the activity has died down considerably. So the country music recording artist came up with an idea to revive the enthusiasm in the winter sport.

The Big Deal is a snowmobile poker run set to take place Feb. 19, 2011 on the paths of the Sudbury Trail Plan, ending with a dinner and concert by Berrio at the Garson Arena.

“Snowmobiling is a sport that's very popular in northern Ontario,” he said. “(The Big Deal) is going to be a big thing for Sudbury, let alone northern Ontario.”"

The Urban Country - Bicycles Are Transportation: Safe Left Turns for Bicycles

"Left turns are one of the most dangerous manoeuvres to execute on a bicycle in North America. Of course, this doesn’t have to be the case. Many cities have engineered infrastructure to make left turns safe and comfortable for bicyclists.

But here in Toronto – and most other cities in North America – turning left legally is unsafe.

Here’s why: In order to make a legal left turn on a two-way street in Toronto, you must first merge from your normal riding position on the right side of the road to the left-most lane. This in itself can be dangerous and is unnecessary."

From Marshmallow Man to Ironman: Victoria Rail Trail (Lindsay to Haliburton, Ontario)

"The Victoria Rail Trail is an abandoned railway which has been transformed into a 90km recreational trail.

The main section runs from Lindsay to Haliburton along the former Victoria Railway right-of-way. There is another southern section that runs from Lindsay down to Bethany.

Along the way the trail crosses old railway trestles, goes by abandoned stations, and there's even a model railway museum in Kinmount. It's neat stuff if you are a train geek!"

Award for trails promotion - Brantford Expositor - Ontario, CA

"A promotional campaign showcasing 20 hiking trails and birding opportunities within the Grand River watershed, spearheaded by an area tourism consortium, has received an Ontario Tourism award for marketing initiative.

The Trails Take Flight promotion, aimed at linking the compatible activities of hiking and bird-watching, was produced in 2009 by Grand River Country, a partnership of municipalities along the Grand River, as well as the GRCA.

A campaign 'microsite' and brochure provided maps, detailed trail routes and descriptions, listings of bird species and birding trails adjacent to the Grand River.
The successful marketing campaign doubled visits to the main website at www.grandrivercountry.com.

The campaign was recently recognized at an annual Ontario Tourism Awards gala in Huntsville. The municipal marketing partnership of Grand River Country received an award for the best marketing initiative under $25,000."

The Healing Benefits Of Therapeutic Horseback Riding

"The motion of a horse rhythmically and gently moves the rider's body in a manner that mimics the sensation of walking. For riders with physical disabilities, this has been shown to improve balance, muscle strength, flexibility, and coordination. Riders demonstrate improved pelvic and spine mobility, better postural control, enhanced range of motion, and increased physical stamina. Horseback riding provides physical independence and freedom along with trust and friendship between the rider and horse for increased self-confidence."

ATV PATROLS WELL RECEIVED AMONG HUNTERS - Dunnville Chronicle - Ontario, CA

"Over the past week many heads have turned in Haldimand County and it was the hunters who looked like deer caught in the headlights.

The Haldimand County OPP detachment put their newly acquired All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) to good use patrolling Haldimand County checking deer hunter's documents and ensuring that hunters respected private property. While only one hunter has been charged to date, the ATV patrols were well received by both the hunting community and citizens of Haldimand County. The ATVs allow officers to travel vast distances of rugged terrain with ease, as such they are able to find the hunters who are often well back from the roads and usually in forested areas.
Detachment Commander John Periversoff says that, 'In years past the OPP had received reports that individuals had been discharging firearms and trespassing on private property illegally. With the community identifying this as a serious issue and with the recent acquisition of the ATV's we were in an optimal position to begin this proactive patrol.'"

Take the Lane: Cities need to give cyclists a better deal

"Toronto Star columnist Joe Fiorito has done a nicely reasoned column about why cyclists should be getting a better deal from Toronto planners, although it can apply equally well to any municipal government.

I esp. like the last line: 'All I'm saying is we ought to pay a little more attention to bike riders in this city because right now, there are far too many motorists on the gravy train.' Yeah, it's a shot at Mayor Auto, but at its essence, it is so true."

Sault Ste. Marie Green Pages on SooToday.com

"TORONTO (November 9) - Support for the Greenbelt has become so great, it is becoming a cherished part of the Ontario identity.

A recent study by Environics examines the growing relationship between Ontarians and the Greenbelt.

It discovered an overwhelming nine out of 10 people agree that the greenbelt is one of the most important contributions to the future of our province, and over half say that the Greenbelt is extremely important to them personally.

'I am overwhelmed that Ontarians have taken such a convincing stand on the Greenbelt,' said Burkhard Mausberg, president of Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation.

Even in hard economic times, 88 percent of people agreed that upholding environmental policy is important."

How to Identify a Canadian Cyclist | Ontario Cyclist

"So how do you identify a real Canadian cyclist?

Canadians always stop at Tim Horton’s for a coffee, eh. Yes, we know that coffee is not the best beverage for a cyclist but we need our Timmy’s fix, eh.

Canadian cyclists have been known to wear Toronto Maple Leaf jerseys instead of their cycling jerseys.

Canadians cycle farther than Americans. We do this by counting distances in kilometers instead of miles.

Canadian cyclists have to dodge trees on their bicycle paths placed by aggressive beavers (yes it really happened to me this year), eh.

Canadians say “eh” a lot."

Honda Fall Excursion Contest Has Ontario Outdoors Enthusiasts Facebooking

"'What could be better than being on a guided tour on Honda ATVs, in late autumn, in beautiful Muskoka, Ontario?' Derek Verheyen wonders. The Central Zone Sales Supervisor of Honda Canada Inc. answers his own question.

'Having someone else pay for it, and taking a buddy with you.'

Mr. Verheyen is referring to the Honda Fall Excursions promotion. In December some lucky participant will win an adventure for two, zipping around the Parry Sound area with experienced local ATV guides from Bear Claw Tours."

Brant County - Company Report - Energy Digital

"The communities have embraced the idea of green energy. When the county announced the Green Accord and the Green Energy Hub, overwhelming support erupted from the press and the community. “It was truly wonderful to see the councils of the various municipalities and territories almost unanimously support the initiative. It’s almost to the point where you see a hunger by the councils and by the people to ignore their geographical boundaries, which tend to limit the thinking, to a broader, wider thinking and initiatives,” says Mayor Eddy. “We cannot continue in our province to be isolated communities.”

The county’s location—a rural area near a large city—along with reasonable housing prices make it attractive for industries to offer a great quality of life for their employees. The area benefits from an extensive trail system that is accessible across the region. The trails are paved, making it easy for families, cyclists and those in wheelchairs to enjoy the outdoors. The Grand River offers opportunities for kayaking and fly fishing."

Kate Pace Way work trails on - The North Bay Nugget - Ontario, CA

"Construction to extend the Kate Pace Way along Booth Road should be completed midway through the month, says a city official.

We will get all the paving done this year. We might have touch-ups to do in ditches next year to get them grassed and those types of things, but we are on schedule to get the asphalt down,' said Ian Kilgour, the city's director of parks, recreation and leisure services.

The $1.25-million project will extend the recreational trail from Marshall Avenue along Booth Road to Lakeshore Drive. Trans-Canada Trails covered $300,000 of the cost through Discovery Routes."

Don Valley Mountain Bike Trails - Toronto, ON

"Gets bonus points for being close to downtown. It can be really busy in the weekends and afternoons, but if you go before work in the morning you can have the whole trail system to yourself.

The trails can be really challenging especially for new riders. Although I haven't tried it before, I think they do group rides on Tuesday evenings in the summer. "

Downtown trail offers a surprisingly good nature walk | Fun Ontario newsletter

"With a population of more than 700,000, Mississauga is Canada’s sixth largest city and probably one of the least likely of places you would consider heading to for a nature trail. Well, it should be. Shocking. We know. Just trust us.

This bustling urban jungle has a few wonderfully tucked away trails that go for miles. We recommend checking out the David J. Culham Trail. The trail starts in Erindale Park (from Dundas Street, east of Mississauga Road) and extends north of Britannia Road to Pine Cliff Drive. The Trail provides access to Riverwood Conservancy at Burnhamthorpe Road. This trail is open to the public and there is no admission. Dogs and bikes are welcome."

Our horseback riding lessons teach you to become a natural horse trainer too!

"We feel horseback riding lessons should address the horse’s needs first then the riders. This is for the benefit of both parties. It is an injustice to the rider to not be given the tools to understand how a horse feels and learns as well as it is an injustice to the horse to have someone crawl on their back without this knowledge first."

Ontarians Encouraged To Show Off Their Favourite Conservation Area :: NorthumberlandView.ca :: A View Like No Other

"People across Ontario are being encouraged to show off their talents as well as their favourite Conservation Area by getting out and taking pictures for the 2011 Ontario Conservation Areas Photo Contest.

The Ontario Conservation Areas Photo Contest has two purposes. First it will get people out exploring their local conservation areas. Second, it’s a way for Conservation Ontario to build its image library.

Because Conservation Areas are close to urban centres, they are accessible outdoor destinations and play an important role in the health and well-being of Ontario’s residents,” says Don Pearson, General Manager of Conservation Ontario, the main sponsor behind the contest."

The Rideau Trail, one hike at a time

"Looking for a challenge? May I suggest taking a walk -- a long walk. A walk that cannot be completed in a day or two, but can be completed in segments. The Rideau Trail that connects Ottawa to Kingston is truly one of Ontario's best-kept secrets.

We chose to tackle the trail by walking on a morning or an afternoon, or one day at a time. This hike will bring you through provincial parks, over beaver dams, through marshes, across meadows, along road allowances, up and over stiles (which are an arrangement of steps that allow you to go over fences) and along trails and escarpments."
