'Free parking for the privileged’ in Uxbridge

‘Discriminatory’ to charge non-locals for use of regional trails

To the editor:

As a Durham Regional Forest trail user, I have no objections to paid parking or user-pay principles on Durham Regional Forest trails. But I absolutely object to discriminatory fees when one set of taxpayers — Uxbridge residents — are given preferential treatment to access Durham regional property, in this case through the provision of free parking.

For the past 25 years, Oro-Medonte has been a celebrated destination and training ground for world-class mountain biking and cycling athletes. This was recently showcased at the Hardwood Ski and Bike National Championships, one of many cycling events that take place locally and bring people from all over the province and country to cycle the amazing mountain bike trails in Oro-Medonte – aka a mountain biking mecca.

Local Oro-Medonte resident Andrew Watson is one of these cycling athletes. Based in Craighurst, Andrew is a specialized athlete and cycling coach with a long list of accomplishments behind his name. Winner of four Canada Cup Championships in cross country mountain biking, and multiple Provincial Championships across four disciplines (Mountain Biking, Road, Hill Climb and Cyclocross), Andrew has raced internationally in World Cups, Pan-American championships and prestigious Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) races. A proud member of the Canadian National Cycling team from 2004 to 2012, Andrew’s passion for cycling anchors him firmly to the township.

“Oro-Medonte has some of the best trails and cycling opportunities in the world,” says Andrew. “Our expansive trail network - both public and private - is truly world-class. We have terrific mountain biking and road riding here, and a vibrant cycling community that I’m lucky to be part of.”

Hundreds of riders from across Ontario and beyond will be hitting the asphalt — and the dirt — in North Bay during the upcoming Civic Holiday Weekend as the city plays host to Cycle North Bay.

A first-of-its-kind affair, Cycle North Bay features a series of events that will showcase multiple facets of the cycling world, including the 2022 Provincial Criterium Championships, 2022 Provincial Road Championships, High Performance Youth Road Races, Youth Mountain Bike XC and Women’s Mountain Bike Exchange.
