More speakers added to enhanced Ontario Trails program
Trailhead Ontario, the province of Ontario's lead trail organization, the Ontario Trails Council, just keeps adding speakers to round out its itinerary at this years upcoming trails conference.
Being held at the Don Valley Suites and Hotel June 21-24 this conference has over 35 individual panel sessions, a large International plenary session, 2 luncheons, AND two days of trail building with the Guru of Trail-building from the USA - Woody Keene. We also have a confirm from the Irish National Trails Office who is pleased to be sending their Director Cormac MacDonnell to our event!
Many people in Ontario have spent $1,000's over the years heading down to the states for tutorials at the American trails conference, the Ontario Trails Council is pleased to offer this style of conference right here, this summer in Toronto!

Ice Out - Already?!
Well, it seems like a late April Fool's joke, but reports of some access points in Algonquin being ice free have been confirmed. Jeff Ridpath, host of www.canoelake.ca recently made a posting that Canoe Lake, Smoke Lake, and Joe Lake are all ice free. Hopefully today's weather will provide a clear satellite photo. Rain and winds from a recent system seem to have done a number on ice conditions in Algonquin.

Outdoor Getaways - a few insights
Our winter getaway over the last two days was supposed to
include a couple of different activities: snow-tubing and
outdoor skating. Well, our outdoor skating fell through, due to
the extraordinarily warm conditions, however, we had a beautiful
day yesterday on Kempenfelt Bay in Barrie, where we enjoyed some
great outdoor time on frozen Lake Simcoe.
Today, after our delicious filling breakfast at Nicholyn Farms
Bed and Breakfast, we headed off for another adventure:
snowtubing at Horseshoe Valley. Unfortunately the weather today
was even less cooperative: as the day progressed it went from
freezing rain to rain to a veritable downpour as we drove back
to Toronto.
Nevertheless the morning was cold enough for our snowtubing
adventure. My 8-year old nephew had never been snowtubing
before, and knowing his penchant for high-speed
adrenaline-filled activities, we knew that he would fall in love
with this sport.

Trail safety begins with regular supervision and user awareness
Firstly our sincere condolences to the victim. Generally speaking you should be able to use trails without fear or accident. In the wilderness or trail activity there is always a degree of self-responsibility and risk. However, some times open spaces and trails can be used by some people as places where victimization can occur. Regrettably this is no different than other recreational facilities. This is why parks and green-space have lighting at night, and why arenas and pools are supervised. Unfortunately there are always people out there who don't follow the rules, whether it has to do with trespass, vandalism, noise rules or accident or other crime. So we have to take that as a fact. We don't like it, but it is what it is.
So what could you do? The best thing you can do is prepare before you go. Even the simplest of trips can be a hazard. Remember the simple rule, look both ways before crossing the street? Yet every day we hear of pedestrian/car or bike/car accidents. The same vigilance, or enhanced vigilance needs to be practiced before you go out on trails. Here are some basics:
Tell someone else where you are going. Plan a return time. Carry a cell phone, don't go alone. Trail with a friend. Put a light on your bike. Vary your route. Go at peak use times when other people are out and about. Get to know some folks living along the trail. Women and children should remember other personal safety and street proofing guidelines. Visit the OTC Trail Smart pages for more detailed information. The point is, after a couple of weeks of practice these simple practices will become as second nature to you as "Looking both ways" and you'll have increased your safety margin immensely.

Marking their trail - The Barrie Examiner - Ontario, CA
Put this in your paper: This guy borrowed a quarter from me in 1962," chuckles a railroad pensioner pointing an accusing finger at another nearby, "and he still hasn't paid me back."
The memory of a 50-year-old quarter debt could prove to be valuable for Paul Marshall and Joanna McEwen. Although, it's the memory they're after, not the coin.
The Oro-Medonte Township pair are hoping to tap into that keen skill of recollection to develop a unique series of plaques along the Oro Rail Trail as it passes through Oro from Barrie to Orillia.

Top 10 Spring Activities in the Blue Mountain area Lovin' Blue Mountain!
Top 10 Spring Activities in the Blue Mountain area
The signs of spring are everywhere. The ice is leaving the bay. Crocuses are peeking their heads out. The early tulips are as well. Even saw my first robin the other day – fat, red and hopping across the lawn. It won’t be long before the mountainsides start turning green.
And while skiers and snowmobilers may be a little sad at the changing seasons, every year there is more and more to do in Blue Mountain culturally and with activities. So while the ice is still coming out in cottage country all of these activities make this area the best in Ontario for a spring getaway. Here are my top ten ways to celebrate spring during your visit.
