Life is pretty good for most black bears come fall. After a spring and summer of gorging themselves, some bears go into their dens weighing upwards of 200 to 300 pounds.
What is it, though, that triggers bears to come out of hibernation every spring? Is it hunger, sunlight or something more primordial?
Dr. Marty Obbard, an OMNR Research Scientist and bear expert, says it’s mostly daylight flooding into the den as the snow pack covering the entrances begins to melt.
“It’s at that point bears become more aware of daylight and more active.”

City Recommends Disbanding Committees
Mayor Ford’s Executive Committee voted in support of the recommendation to eliminate the City’s 21 advisory committees, including the Toronto Cycling Advisory Committee (TCAC). Approximately 30 individuals made deputations at the Executive Committee meeting in support of reinstating the advisory committees. Many of the deputations were specific to the TCAC and approximately 6 bike union members had the opportunity to speak. Citizens spoke on the merits of the cycling advisory committee by pointing out the free expert advice it provides to City staff and Council.
