Lake Ontario trail added to National Trails System

Jun 05, 2015 — SACKETS HARBOR, N.Y. (AP) A trail at the eastern end of Lake Ontario in northern New York is among 10 local and state trails being added to the National Trails System in advance of National Trails Day on Saturday.
The Sackets Harbor Battlefield History Trail is a three-quarter-mile loop that provides recreational and educational opportunities for visitors to the state historic site there.
Ten panels along the trail describe the pivotal role of the Sackets Harbor battle during the War of 1812, the 1860s Navy Yard, and the importance of historic preservation.
Hundreds of organized activities are planned Saturday as part of National Trails Day. A list is on the American Hiking Society's website.
