Snowmobile club grooming trails for weekend riders

ANDREW PHILIPS/SPECIAL TO THE PACKET & TIMES Mike Wiancko, right, of the Orillia District Snowmobile Club, speaks to another snowmobile enthusiast after grooming a section of trail near Tudhope Park. The club is busy getting area trails ready for the weekend.
Rob Love has been fielding a number of calls from the Toronto area this week.
The Orillia District Snowmobile Club president said sledding enthusiasts in that area are excited to hear about all of the snow that’s hit the region over the past few days.
“We’ve had quite a few people calling who are looking for places to go,” Love said, adding the Orillia area is close enough for those living in the Toronto area to come up for the day.
“This is a good place to drop the machine off and go for a ride. It’s also a good location as the starting point for a trip further north.”
The club’s large industrial groomers were busy preparing trails on the west side of Lake Couchiching this week.
“It’s more of a priority since we’ve had a little more snow (there),” Love said, noting while more snow forecast throughout the week is good news, the colder temperatures mean it’s a little bit tougher to groom since it doesn’t pack down as well. “But it’s a lot better than what we had before.”
Mike Wiancko, the club’s vice-president, was busy grooming a stretch of trail in and around Orillia. He said the trails should be in great shape for the weekend.
Besides trails running through the city, the club operates a network of trails throughout Oro-Medonte, Ramara and Severn townships.
And despite the lack of snow prior to Christmas, Love said he wasn’t worried snowmobilers would have to wait too long to enjoy their favourite pastime.
“I never really get into a panic until we’re into the second week of January without snow,” he joked.
“We’ve sold a lot of permits this year, which is good. The sales are based on last year’s snowfalls.”
Love said the club boasts a core group of about 30 volunteers who help with grooming and getting everything ready for the season.
Each fall, the club’s volunteers go through sections of the network, cutting back the overgrowth encroaching on the trails. They also install stop, yield and turn signs along with directional signs pointing to specific destinations.
“We got a few extra people out this year, which is great,” Love said, adding the club also has about 1,100 permit-buying members.
A seasonal Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs permit costs $260. Permits are available online and through a number of area vendors.

Ontario Trails News - support your local winter trail business - help beat the late onset on winter!

Choose from 1,000's of kilometers of snowmobile trail in Ontario

Ontario’s snow businesses hit hard by December’s warm weather

Slow start to winter weather, a stark contrast to last year’s stormy holiday season, hurting many businesses, from snowmobiling to snow removal

OurWindsor.Ca
At J.T.’s Snowmobile Repair, around 30 kilometres west of Barrie, they’ve sold only two snowmobiling permits since Dec. 1.
“Normally this time of year, we’d sell 40 by now,” says general manager Trevor Bronee.
The Saturday after Christmas is typically one of the shop’s busiest days of the year, yet this year, amid a near absence of snow, only a dozen or so customers came in.
The snow-free landscape throughout much of Ontario is affecting all sorts of winter businesses, from snowmobiling to snow removal. It’s a stark contrast from last year’s holiday weather, when ahistoric ice storm paralyzed southern Ontario just before Christmas. This holiday season, there has barely been a dusting.
“We call the snow ‘pennies from heaven,’ ” says Larry Richards, president of East-West Snow Services, a Toronto-based family business that’s been around since 1958.
Last December, the company salted city streets around 15 to 20 times. This year they’ve only been out four or five times.
The lack of snow has a trickle-down effect throughout the economy, Richard says, and it’s affecting a whole slew of businesses.
“No one’s buying salt now, no one’s buying shovels,” he explains. “Snow plows aren’t being used, and if they’re not breaking, guys aren’t selling parts.”
There are also snow plow drivers on standby, making only 30 to 40 per cent of the income they could rake in during a snowfall, he says.
One winter business near Barrie had to close down entirely.
Hardwood Ski and Bike, which has a popular network of cross-country ski trails, was only open until Dec. 22 owing to the area’s lack of snow. Indeed, the company missed the entire Christmas season.
“We would normally have 400-plus visitors each day and didn’t have any over (the holidays,)” says Jack Saffeville, president and general manager.
Saffeville is hoping for snow over the next few days because the first weekend in January typically brings in Hardwood’s biggest numbers, with two $30,000 days in a row. For a $2-million business, losing those few days would mean a huge financial hit.
“I’ve had a few sleepless nights,” says Saffeville. “But there’s really not a heck of a lot we can do about it — we don’t make snow.”
The expense of making powder for the area’s cross-country trails would be too great, he explains.
For alpine ski resorts, snow-making is a blessing. Ashley Amis, public relations manager at Blue Mountain Resort near Collingwood, Ont., says the resort is tracking on budget for December.
“We have a range of snow guns that can help us combat mild temperatures,” she explains, adding 19 of the resort’s 42 trails are open.
It’s a similar scene at Horseshoe Resort in Barrie, where snow-making teams are going full tilt. Jonathan Reid, director of partnerships and events, says the resort’s hotel has been at 95-per-cent occupancy since Dec. 20, and 15 of their 27 ski runs are currently open.
The biggest hit, he says, has been on cross-country skiing. Like Hardwood, they’ve had to shut down their trails.
And it’s not just Ontario businesses that have been hit. The Associated Press reported Monday that New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his entourage called off a trip to popular snowmobiling destination Ridge View Lodge because there was no snow.
But with snowfall in the forecast throughout Ontario later this week, winter businesses are hoping for a boost — and in the meantime, they’re making the best of the warm weather.
“The snow plow guys are happy. They got to spend Christmas with their families,” Richards says.

Snowmobile Permits Early Bird Sale on now!

$180 Seasonal Permit Returns After Generating 21% Growth Last Winter 2015 Seasonal Snowmobile Trail Permit Offers 30% Savings if Purchased on or before November 1

(Barrie, ON – October 1, 2014) – Last year, the Old Farmer’s Almanac forecast a snowy, cold winter for Ontario and it was right. Now, with the Old Farmer’s Almanac predicting another good, old-fashioned Ontario winter for this season,
snowmobilers can catch a big savings break by purchasing 2015 Seasonal Snowmobile Trail Permits in October.

After a 21% permit sales spike last winter, the not-for-profit Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) is selling Seasonal Permits again for a special pre-season fee of $180 when purchased online at www.ofsc.on.ca on or before November 1, 2014.

“The $180-Nov. 1 option we introduced last winter represents a 30% saving off the regular Seasonal Permit fee of $260 and Ontario snowmobilers responded by purchasing many more permits, ” said OFSC President Remi Sauve. “A year over year sales increase of 21% is phenomenal in any business, and that, plus a very snowy winter has generated a considerable momentum for snowmobiling heading into 2015.”

According to recent consumer surveys undertaken by the OFSC, 93% of respondents said they were planning to buy as many or more permits for the coming season as they did last year. Noting that the $180-Nov. 1 option also attracted over 18,000 new permit buyers last winter, the OFSC is confident that with this incentive in place again, even more new participants and former riders will discover the fun of today’s snowmobiling at a very affordable cost for the coming season.

Available on or before November 1, the $180 Seasonal Permit spearheads the success of a new business model for trail operations by the OFSC that debuted last winter. Known as “A Framework For Change”, the new plan is a comprehensive approach, including more permit types with varied fees, allocating more money where it snows each winter, and promoting more efficient trail operations across the province.

“We think it’s important to keep OFSC snowmobiling as accessible as possible for Ontario families as well as for visitors from outside the province. That’s why the OFSC is very pleased with the success of A Framework For Change and a survey response from this past spring showing that 95.8% of snowmobilers believe that Ontario snowmobiling is enjoyable, very enjoyable or extremely enjoyable,” said OFSC Executive Director Paul Shaughnessy.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is a volunteer led not-for-profit association, which through strong leadership, provides a wide range of quality programs and services to, and on behalf of, its member organizations. Our provincial network of organized snowmobile trails connects Ontario communities providing responsible riding experiences that are safe, enjoyable and environmentally sustainable.
Projects Updates - National Trails Coalition (ON)

This program was announced at the end of June. In total the OTC had 93 enquiries for funding. Snowmobile had 89 projects come forward and ORV 19, for a total of 201 expressions of interest.

There have been several logistical issues to work out, namely find sharing on projects, file completions, and use of other funds. The NTC is working towards approvals at this time. NOTE: the NTC is waiting for all jurisdictions to report in before approving specific provinces or territories. We can therefore only go as fast as the slowest province. As they roll out you will be contacted.

The total value of work on these 59 projects (without single snowmobile, or single ORV) is over $21,000,000. The project costs alone are $17,600,000. The dollars raised by the communities applying is over $10,000,000 of this and the NTC contribution is of course maxed at $2.1 million.

The Ontario Review Committee has met on two occasions to reconcile receipt and acknowledgements. We are working towards September approvals and communications.

The NTC also hired a National Program Facilitator - his name is Roger Pelletier. He can be reached by email at: rogpel@videotron.ca
