Two trails terminate in Port Colborne, both of which form part of the Greater Niagara Circle Route. These are excellent, paved, multi-used trails passing by some of the best scenery in southern Niagara, including the historic Welland Canal. Great for walking, cycling, skating, or wheeling. Click on the name of each trail to view their respective web-pages. More trails on website.

Greater Niagara Circle RouteThe Greater Niagara Circle Route
The Greater Niagara Circle Route is a paved, multi-use trail that connects Port Colborne, Fort Erie, Niagara Falls, Niagara on the Lake, St. Catharines, Thorold, and Welland in a 140 km circuit. It is made up of several different trails. In Port Colborne, the Welland Canals Parkway, which runs on a north/south axis from Welland, and the Friendship Trail, which runs on an east/west axis from Fort Erie, both meet at Seaway Park. A spur of the trail runs along the Port Promenade, parallel to Historic West Street, and terminates at scenic HH Knoll Park.

Support Toronto Trails Committee and Welland East Side Trails - from Ontario Trails

More Information

Many volunteers worked hard for the last 21 years with the Seaway Commission and the Niagara Region to develop the East Side Canal Trail. This trail is a vital segment of the larger Greater Niagara Circle Route Trail. Without this link, and City of Welland Support the entire 160km loop is at risk of closure. Thorold, Port Robinson, Port Colborne, Niagara on the Lake, Niagara Falls, Stephensville, Fort Erie, St. Catharines are at risk of having over $10.6million of federal, provincial and private sector money invested in developing and maintaining this tourism and local community trail; being wasted!

Reasons for signing

  • Charles Levere ST CATHARINES, CANADA
I walk along this trail many times throught the year
  • Jo-Ann Kinnear PORT ROBINSON, CANADA
I use this trail all the time with my two sons, age 8 and age 5. It would be a great disappointment if we didn't have the east side of the canal to enjoy the outdoors!!
  • myself, my daughter, my son, my girlfriend, and her two children all use this trail on a regular basis for trail riding, we operate properly licensed and insured off road bikes, its an amaxzing family outdoor activity for which the opportunities are sadly shrinking
  • Frank Hagar STONEY CREEK, CANADA
Maintaining a place where people can enjoy the city and participate in some physical activity.
  • There are very few places a family can go in the area to enjoy their offroading recreational time. It's been a wonderful way for my daughter and I to see nature, have adventures and allows her to also enjoy a common enjoyment with her father. Not many girls have that. Let us continue to legally enjoy the Eastside Trail System. Not just us but the many other families we have come across who also enjoy spending time in this way.

Ontario Calls for National Transit Plan

October 2, 2012

Ontario Government Pushes for Innovative Solutions

Ontario is asking the federal government to develop a national plan for public transit and increase overall infrastructure funding to boost productivity and create jobs.
These recommendations are part of Ontario's submission to the federal government's long-term infrastructure plan. Ontario is calling for urgent investment in core economic infrastructure which includes transit.Investing in transit infrastructure projects delivers immediate economic benefits, from increasing manufacturing jobs to savings billions lost because of gridlock. Increased federal investment is also required in other types of core economic infrastructure such as:
  • highways, roads and bridges
  • public transit
  • border crossings and gateways
  • water and wastewater systems
Other recommendations include streamlining many of the administrative requirements for federal infrastructure funding, and stimulating more private sector innovation through the use of alternative financing and procurement funding models, which shift some of the risks associated with complex infrastructure projects onto private sector partners.
Investing in infrastructure is part of the McGuinty government's plan to create jobs for Ontarians and strengthen the economy. A strong economy protects the services that mean the most to families - health care and education.

How about a national trails plan? You know in support of the trails strategy?
