Ontario Trail News - A Tale of Two Tarts. (So very much more going on on trails, but this gets the news)

Two tarts beat as one: Tasting event aims to end Southern Ontario pastry war

It was a sticky situation: two Southern Ontario regions jostling over butter tart tourism. A lawyer was even called in.
But the bitter rivalry between the Butter Tart Trail of Wellington North and the Kawarthas-Northumberland Butter Tart Tour has sweetened. The pair is now teaming up for a one-day tart-tasting event in Toronto.
“We’ve really made an attempt to make this a collaborative effort,” said Karen Theriault, executive director of regional tourism for the Kawarthas area.
The Aug. 15 event was an easy sell to Wellington North.
“Butter tarts are an Ontario quintessential dessert,” said April Marshall, tourism and marketing manager for Wellington North. “We felt it was better to make a positive out of this situation instead of getting wrapped up in controversy back and forth.”
The Kawarthas-Northumberland Butter Tart Tour, started this year, had raised the ire of Wellington North, whose 30-kilometre tart trail was launched seven years ago. Wellington North was worried the competing tart attraction would hurt its tourism and bakeries. The regions, both north of Toronto, are about 180 kilometres apart.
Wellington North turned to a lawyer to issue a cease-and-desist letter to the tart tour, contending it infringed on its trademarked Butter Tart Trail. As a result, Kawarthas-Northumberland was added to the tour’s name, easing tension between the two regions.
They’ll each showcase their buttery desserts at the Toronto event, which will also include tarts from the town of Midland and Tartistry, a west Toronto bakery playing host to the tasting. Midland is home to the Best Butter Tart Festival. Indeed, many communities and bakers have laid claim to having the best tarts.
“Butter tarts are certainly something that no matter where you’re travelling in the province, you’re going to come across a bakery or two or three or more that are making butter tarts,” noted Rebecca LeHeup, executive director of Ontario Culinary Tourism Alliance.
The tourism alliance is co-organizing the tart event. Ms. LeHeup believes butter tarts could become to Ontario what beef is to Alberta, lobster to Nova Scotia, poutine to Quebec. The earliest published Canadian recipe for butter tarts is from Barrie, Ont., dating back to 1900.
“Why not, in search for our culinary identity, latch onto the butter tart?” Ms. LeHeup proposed.

Ontario Trails News - Cycling, Winter, Information and More about Ontario Trails!

Use this link to answer our Capital Allocation Question - January 18, 2013
View this email in your browser
Hi - I just got a phone call from Mary Welsh from Brantford.

This next Tuesday she is going to make an argument for trail allocation in the Brantford budget.

In order to make a compelling argument she asked me if I had an idea of the amount of trail dedicated dollars in capital budgets OR if I could survey and find out.

I am sharing the following spreadsheet on google docs with you.

Just look for your name and if you could please provide the capital allocation from 2002 and 2013 (or 2012 if most available).

If you are not a member of the OTC please use the non-member section below the membership to add your data.

NOTE: The data you post is viewable to all recipients of this e-mail, if you are not comfortable sharing your data - send it to me in a separate e-mail and I'll share with Mary via a different spreadsheet.

I am away on Monday in Toronto, but if you could leave the data I'll get it to Mary early Tuesday.

Norfolk County piloting Ontario Trails Activity Project
Ever wonder how many people use your trails?

The Norfolk County Trails has initiated a trail use survey on 4 of its trails. The Sunrise, Waterford, Delhi, Lynn Valley trails all have been incorporated into a larger province wide pilot project.

Designed to be easy to use off of any iPhone or mobile device, the application simply directs you through QR code to an on-line survey. The survey asks 10 easy to answer questions about the trail, how far you travelled to use the trail and improvements you’d like to see on the trail, etc.

“This represents a great opportunity for Norfolk County to use available technology, in a very low cost way to assess the use of its trails,” said Mark Boerkamp, Trail Development/Business Marketing Coordinator. “Collecting data in this way is cheaper than laser trail counters and gives users the chance to tell us more about their trail trip, especially in rural areas.”

Current trails being surveyed include:
www.ontariotrails.on.ca/sunrise              Norfolk Sunrise Trail survey
www.ontariotrails.on.ca/delhi                 Delhi Rail Trail survey
www.ontariotrails.on.ca/waterford          The Waterford Heritage Trail survey
www.ontariotrails.on.ca/lynnvalley         The Lynn Valley Trail survey

“Ontario Trails Council is pleased to support the desire of Norfolk County to know more about how it’s trails are used so that it can strategically improve trails for use; by local residents, cycling tourists or other groups,” affirmed Patrick Connor, Executive Director, Ontario Trails Council.

As regional tourism organizations promote trail tourism, and as local communities use trails to increase resident health, knowing the level of use will assist planners in developing trails that make a difference.

Trail Education
Our event calendar shows weekly adjustments to our course offerings. This week we have added another date for Volunteer Management with Diana Smyth and adjusted out two courses from this current week.

In addition, we have added the new Trail Design Course detailed below. We have also taken calls from some folks wishing to take the Trails Marketing Course in Kingston October 18, 2012. Sorry for any confusion this may cause. Thank you.

Be sure to use our array of press or other flyers to circulate to your local papers or possible attendees. All available for use - call - 877-668-7245 or 519-941-8911, or 1-866-560-7783
