The Importance Of Trip Plans For Outdoor Adventures : AdvenQuest

The Importance Of Trip Plans For Outdoor Adventures : AdvenQuest: "Let’s say you were lost in the backcountry and you could only choose one item to increase your chance of survival, what would it be…GPS? map? compass? matches? knife? emergency blanket? survival manual? The list is endless, and while all those things can improve your odds, there is one item most of us never think about,it’s a Trip Plan. The best part is, unlike all that survival gear, it doesn’t add any weight to your pack.

Pilots call them “Flight Plans”, backcountry canoeists call them “Float Plans” and backpackers call them “Hike Plans”, but whatever you call them, a Trip Plan can add an element of safety to your outdoor adventures by giving your potential rescuers a time and place to start looking for you if you don’t arrive at your destination."

'Burg Birder: Weekend Birding on Lake Ontario

'Burg Birder: Weekend Birding on Lake Ontario: "The Annual Ontario Bird Records Committee meeting was on Sunday, so I headed up to Toronto and area on Saturday morning just to check out some areas.
I first went for a walk at Riverwood Park along Burnhamthorpe Road. I became familiar with this park a year ago in the winter. It is a large park with trails and connects with Erindale Park to the south. Soon after my arrival, I heard Ruby-crowned Kinglet and Winter Wren singing. I saw a few birds, and some local people pointed out a Cooper's Hawk at a nest site along the slope.
After lunch, I headed down to the waterfront."

Spring ATV Ride|Ontario News North: "Driving Northwestern Ontario’s Hwy 17 I have often wished for extra time to follow the billboards promoting Dubreuilville’s ATV Clubinto the French-Canadian community best known for its success with snowmobile tourism and see what all the ATV hype was about. When

Hello Joe,

You can read about 30 case studies of success using GIS for economic development at http://www.gisplanning.com/case-studies.html

These include projects that have created thousands of jobs and many hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity with national companies like Dell, ConocoPhillips, Toyota and Lowes to projects that have created jobs in small towns and rural locations.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Best wishes,

Facebook | 4th annual Strawberries and Asparagus Festival

Facebook | 4th annual Strawberries and Asparagus Festival: "Local First at First Harvest.
Strawberries and Asparagus is a spring harvest celebration that incorporates renewable energy, live music and green living.

Strawberries and Asparagus festival originated in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, but you can host a local festival of your own.

We are happy to share our ideas with you - so that you can kick the growing season off with a Strawberries and Asparagus festival in your community.

In Toronto, the Strawberries and Asparagus Festival will be happening on June 12th 2010. The event will include free food, festival fun, live music, solar stage, solar cooking, green gardening and the very excellent Inorganic Market. Kids activities all day. Yoga and Zen Zone.

A bit of history - event organizer and community member Chris Chopik started a little neighbourhood BBQ kind of gathering in June and one year a band showed up. The BBQ was a celebration of the anniversary of the Spadina Expressway when the 40 acre greenspace that is now host to the Strawberry and Asparagus festival was slated to be paved. Until Active citizens assisted strong minded politicians to make the right long term decision to abandon the Allen at Eglinton."

Rowswell angry Hub Trail bridge OK'd - The Sault Star - Ontario, CA

Rowswell angry Hub Trail bridge OK'd - The Sault Star - Ontario, CA: "Mayor John Rowswell is furious a contract to construct the Fort Creek portion of the Hub Trail was signed behind his back.

Rowswell, who has raised concerns about the design concept of an 800-foot-long bridge to be built over Fort Creek as part of the Hub Trail, said he didn't want to sign the contract until his questions and concerns were alleviated.

The issue first arose at a February council meeting when Rowswell, a professional engineer, said his support for the project was contingent on 'further review of the bridge and foundation material, design and alignment.'
A resolution was passed by city council approving the tender bid and awarding of the contract at the February meeting.

City staff raised Rowswell's concern with the project consultant and received assurances the bridge's design would work."

TheRecord.com - Travel - Algonquin park offers wilderness experiences

TheRecord.com - Travel - Algonquin park offers wilderness experiences: "JOHN WARD
OTTAWA – Algonquin Provincial Park, the jewel of Ontario’s park system, offers an amazing breadth of wilderness experiences.

While parts of the giant park — it’s bigger than Prince Edward Island —include luxury accommodations, travellers can also canoe over 2,100 kilometres of lakes, rivers and streams or hike 140 kilometres of well-mapped forest trails.

A camping trip to the park can seem like Canada 101: listen to the haunting call of a loon echoing in a misty morning. Paddle around a stream bend to find a moose belly-deep in the water. Watch a beaver renovate a winter-damaged dam. Cast a line for speckled or lake trout or the hybrid of the two, the splake.

The park, established in 1893, is the province’s oldest and largest."
