Ontario Trails News - Paddle, Bike, Hike and Ride Ontario's Trails

Proposed Big Ben Memorial Trail in Lanark County Approved
The proposal for a trail in one of Lanark County’s Community forests, named after Canada’s most famous Olympian horse, has now been approved by five levels of governance. In its provision for horses, the Big Ben Memorial Trail marks a first in the history of wilderness trail development on public land in Lanark County.

Approximately 10.5 kms of trail loops have been considered connecting to 8 kms of existing logging roads in the Lavant Main Block forest. Routings for the trail loops will be GPS mapped and tagged commencing this fall and resumed next spring. The three-season, non-wheeled network of wilderness trails will meander throughout the forest accommodating walkers, birders, field naturalists, school nature group outings, families, day packers, and participants in the therapeutic riding program, cross-country skiers and snowshoers. The trail will not interfere with existing users in the forest or the county’s forest management plans and will be closed during deer hunting season.

As part of a national goodwill publicity campaign.  A volunteer doctor who specializes in nutrition & stress management will come on-site to your company and give a 30-minute presentation during a complimentary catered Subway breakfast or lunch.  All you need to do is register at www.2011wellness.com and you will be contacted by an event coordinator.  Also remember to ask about our free health screenings (blood pressure, self defense, yoga, massage etc.).  For any questions or concerns please contact us.

Ontario Trails News - Update

In 2007 the Ontario Government proclaimed the Ontario Trails Strategy.

Through extensive sector collaboration and thorough public outreach the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport sought input through a rigorous 22 meeting schedule.

In this policy document the government lays out balance between the great things about trails - economic benefit, health benefits, active living opportunity, land use for all Ontarians, rail to trail conversion, reduction in user conflict - and the development of awareness about the 88,000km of trails in Ontario.

The Ontario Trails Council (OTC) welcomes input and discourse about the strategy and its impacts. We encourage all Ontarians to consider the strategy and the OTC as you hear about the politics or single sector initiatives, cycling, snowmobiling, trail development or other groups claiming to have a b
etter idea.

OTC welcomes focus through the Ontario Trails Co-ordinating Committee, an award winning group of 10 NGO's and 10 Government departments, where discussions on strategy and direction for land use (conservation etc.), activity (cycling, atv'ing, snowmobiling, equestrian, etc.), infrastructure (bridges, cycling lanes, active transportation etc.) can be discussed.
Please join our group today.

Thanks

FaceBook removing the discussion page reduces the professional use of FB. First you reduced the significance of groups, now, taking out discussions alienates people from gathering around a cause. Discussions also allows for an archival list function - nobody is going to see something of importance if its buried under Older Posts way down my wall as FB is proposing - but on the Discussion page one can always scroll through topics to engage in a discussion, even a year later!
