Greenbelt makes GTA more, not less, livable

As Ontario revisits legislation protecting 1.8-million acres of land around the region, it should dismiss critics who argue that the Greenbelt makes homes less affordable in the GTA.

The rich bracken and foliage of the Greenbelt can be seen in a Pickering woodlot. Queen's Park is set to review legislation that protects this area.

A 10-year anniversary is usually cause for celebration. That should certainly be the case with Ontario’s Greenbelt, the 1.8 million acres of protected farmland, wetlands, watersheds and green spaces that surround our region. The Greenbelt has helped to reduce sprawl, protect our natural environment and provide food for our growing urban region.
Now that we have a decade of experience to consider, the province is formally reviewing its two marquee planning policies: the Greenbelt Act and the Places to Grow Act. Some critics are using this opportunity to suggest that the Greenbelt and provincial land-use rules are making homes less affordable in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). However, that argument doesn’t hold water.

New maps expected to draw cycling tourists to north Simcoe

Local municipalities support Cycle Simcoe initiative

Midland Mirror
MIDLAND – A new map of north Simcoe’s cycling routes will launch next week with hopes of attracting droves of tourists from the Greater Toronto Area.
Midland is the last local municipality to jump on board after Brendan Matheson, cycling strategy co-ordinator for Cycle Simcoe, a Barrie/Simcoe Cycling Club initiative, requested $3,000 each from Midland, Penetanguishene, Tiny and Tay for maps and online development.
Midland council will officially vote on the funding request as part of the town’s upcoming budget meetings.
“This is going to be the start of a great partnership,” Mayor Gord McKay said during Monday’s council meeting.
As part of the request, Matheson also asked the town to help Cycle Simcoe by installing safety signage, improving cycling infrastructure and distributing safety education information.
The “Heart of Georgian Bay” cycling map, which is scheduled to launch at the Toronto International Bicycle ShowMarch 6, will feature seven routes, said Matheson.
They range from eight kilometres in length along the Midland Rotary Waterfront Trail, to 95 kilometres on quiet roads and trails through all four municipalities, he said, adding they will include three trails and four road-based routes.
At the bike show, Cycle Simcoe also plans to launch cycling maps for the Oro-Medonte, Severn and Ramara areas and for the Wasaga Beach, Collingwood and Blue Mountain areas.
“We’re finding most of the cyclists that come up here are from the GTA,” he said.
A Ministry of Tourism survey found two million people took part in cycle tourism in Ontario in 2010, spending $391 million. Compared to 2009, this was a 25 per cent increase in cycle tourists and an 18 per cent boost in spending.
Cycle tourism refers to someone who travels at least 40 kilometres to go cycling, according to Matheson.
He said he hopes cyclists will take advantage of Cycle Simcoe’s interactive online maps by, for example, taking photos of and marking the location of potholes.
The organization, which began in 2012, can then contact municipalities about any problems for quick fixes.
Coun. George MacDonald, an avid cyclist, spoke in support of the maps and confirmed with Matheson air pumping stations will be available along the routes.
“I’m not volunteering because my air is all hot air,” MacDonald quipped.
Coun. Cody Oschefski offered to help Cycle Simcoe with spreading its message on social media.
“There’s a misconception in Midland for young families that there’s nothing to do here,” he said.
Coun. Glen Canning added one of the biggest complaints he hears from cyclists visiting the town is a lack of route maps – “besides the lack of bicycle racks downtown.”

Five places to cross country ski in Durham

DurhamRegion.com
DURHAM -- Motorists may disagree, but those who enjoy strapping wood to their feet and then sliding around the countryside are waiting with bated breath for the snow to start falling.
There are plenty of places in Durham Region where someone can channel their inner Scandinavian and fill their lungs with cold air while cross country skiing. Here are five locations in the region to partake of this winter exercise.
1. Dagmar Ski Resort
This popular Uxbridge resort is a winter wonderland, offering not only cross country skiing, but downhill skiing as well. Those new to the sport can rent equipment and take lessons. The resort offers a variety of passes -- individual, family, 10-day and single day.
2. Ganaraska Forest
The Ganaraska Forest Centre has it all. There are more than 35 kilometres of groomed and track-set trails for the novice and advanced skier, and the trails will challenge all skiers. The forest isn’t in Durham, but on the border with Northumberland, on Cold Springs Camp Road, north of Thertell Road.
3. Long Sault Conservation Area Port Perry 18 km 2/5
The Long Sault Conservation Area is in northern Clarington, just down the road from the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. There are 18 kilometres of trails for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. It should be noted the trails are not groomed. Also, the trails are multi-use, so skiers and hikers could be on the trail at the same time. It’s at 9293 Woodley Rd, off of Regional Road 20, near the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
4. Greenwood Conservation Area Ajax 6 km
Country right next to the city. Anyone wanting to try six kilometres of skiing won’t find a better place. Ontario Trails gives a two out of five for degree of difficulty. There is no place to rent skis, so anyone wanting to go will have to bring their own.
5. Trans-Canada Trail Claremont 20 km 2/5
It’s on Regional Road 5, east of the Hamlet of Claremont in north Pickering. There are 20 kilometres of trails and according to Ontario Trails, they carry a degree of difficulty of two out of five.

There’s still plenty of summer left to learn to camp at Ontario Parks.

NEWBIE CAMPERS
Among the “what’s new” at Ontario Parks are additional Learn to Camp sessions at more locations, says Lori Waldbrook, senior marketing specialist.

There is also a new “Graduate” program offered to past learning participants along with new Learn to Fish sessions at four Ontario Parks.

No car or can’t drive? Then there’s the Parkbus offering transportation from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), with connections from other cities, to a new Learn to Camp in Northern Ontario.

Learning sessions are offered at Selkirk Provincial Park in Southwestern Ontario, Murphys Point Provincial Park in Eastern Ontario and Grundy Lake Provincial Park in Northern Ontario.

As well, in the GTA, Earl Rowe and Emily Provincial Parks are hosting learning sessions in addition to existing programs at Bronte Creek, Darlington, Sibbald Point and Six Mile Lake parks. For rates and availability: ontarioparks.com/learntocamp
The new grad program gives past participants a chance to further hone their camping skills.

There is a choice of one-or two-night sessions at an existing Learn to Camp location or opt for an independent camping experience at Grundy Lake, north of Parry Sound, with guidance provided.

Camping equipment is included and participants just have to bring their own food, bedding and personal items.
You can even take a bus to Learn to Camp with Parkbus service from the GTA to Algonquin, Killarney and Grundy Lake by booking the camping session first and then buying the pre-reserved bus ticket.

GO FISH!
Ontario Parks, in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources, now offers two-hour Learn to Fish sessions.
These are part of the overnight Learn to Camp experiences at Darlington, Earl Rowe, Emily and Sibbald Point parks, with equipment and one-day fishing licenses included.

Other park learning opportunities range from nature photography to kayaking as well as mapping the night sky and creating a stone or wood carving.

THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT
Whether you travel near or far, there’s a camping app available.

Need a flashlight? Looking for easy campsite recipes or a trail to hike? How about a new outdoor game?
Camping apps include ones from Coleman for the Classic Camping Cookbook and Meal Planner, Coleman Lantern and Campfire Tales.

The Ontario Trails Council has a mobile app to search trails by city, town, name or nearby and includes cycling, equestrian, hiking and walking, running and snowshoe and backcountry.

There’s the St. John Ambulance app for first-aid advice and protocols for dealing with emergencies and includes illustrated guides and voice instructions.

Stargazers can download the Royal Astronomical Society’s Clear Sky Chart and there is a proliferation of bird-watching apps available.
