ENGLEHART, Ont. -- Investigators with the OPP's Temiskaming detachment say a man has died after crashing an All-Terrain Vehicle in Englehart in northeastern Ontario.
They say the man was driving the ATV Thursday night when, for unknown reasons, he lost control of the machine.
Police say 64-year old Gary Laflair of Englehart was pronounced dead in hospital.
Investigators say Laflair wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

This winter has been “awesome” for snowmobilers in the North Bay area.
And if Mother Nature co-operates, it could last a bit longer.
“It all depends on what happens Monday,” Shawn Flindall, a director with the North Bay Snowmobilers Club, said Sunday.
“In the typical year, the trails close down by the start of March break. But we might get another week or 10 days out of it.”
The snowmobile club, which operates almost 300 kilometres of trails across the region, has downgraded its trails to yellow from green. That means there could be exposed soil, puddles or other impediments to snowmobilers.
“We’re just saying to use additional caution,” he said. “The trails are still good.”
Temperatures Sunday climbed to about 7C, which Flindall admitted can play havoc with south-facing slopes. The mercury is expected to rise to 5C today, before going down to below zero for the rest of the March break.
“If we can get through the mild weather on Monday, we can get the groomers out again to groom the trails” this week.
“There are a few bad spots.”
He said most trails in southern Ontario have closed for the season, and snowmobilers from other parts of the province have been e-mailing the local club to find out what conditions are like in this area.
“This past week we’ve been getting five to 10 e-mails a day, every day, from people down south asking if there is good riding,” he said.

Respect the law, cops tell snowmobilers

City police have issued a news release asking snowmobilers to respect the laws of the municipality.
Where snowmobiles are permitted
You may drive your registered snowmobile on your own property, on the private trails of organizations to which you belong, on private property when you have the owner’s permission or in permitted City zones. (see map).

Snowmobiles are only permitted on public highways when you are crossing it directly, provided that you come to a complete stop before crossing and that you yield the right of way to all vehicles on the highway before doing so.
Where snowmobiles are not permitted
In accordance with the City of North Bay’s municipal by-law, snowmobilers are not permitted to drive:
• on sidewalks, pathways, footpaths, or other pedestrian ways within the city limits;
• in any parks, except those areas illustrated;
• in any school yard or playground within the city;
• on any lake within 500 feet of the closest building on the land,unless you are driving to a direct point on the land to a permitted area, or vise versa.

You can drive a snowmobile if you have a valid Ontario driver’s licence (any class).

If you do not have a driver’s licence and you are 12 years of age or older, a valid motorized snow-vehicle operator’s licence (MSVOL) will allow you to drive on trails established and maintained by a recreational organization for the use of snowmobiles.
However, you must be 16 years of age or older and have a driver’s licence or a motorized snow-vehicle operator’s licence to drive a snowmobile along or across a public road where snowmobiles are allowed.

An OFSC (Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs) snowmobile trail permit is required to be displayed on the windshield of your snowmobile in order to ride on the trails.
