Trail links expanding in the fall - Peterborough Examiner - Ontario, CA

"An uninterrupted waterfront walkway from Millennium Park to Del Crary Park has moved closer to realization.

The city has used $1,290,000 in federal gas tax funding to construct a critical section of the Otonabee River Trail that will eventually link the two parks along Peterborough's waterfront.

The precarious link of floating docks that once ran along the Holiday Inn waterfront has been replaced with a concrete walkway.

'This was an expensive proposition,' explained urban planner Brian Buchardt. 'There was a lot of work done here to ensure its longevity... its accessibility.'"

So much to see in lovely Elora, Ontario

"Elora, Ontario, a onetime agricultural centre turned tourist destination that illustrates the meaning of 'picturesque.'

Many of the finely crafted limestone houses built by the village's Scottish pioneers nearly two centuries ago remain. More original stone buildings are found downtown, reincarnated as galleries, gift shops, artists' studios and restaurants along the wide avenues. And everywhere, flower-bedecked planters and hanging baskets add splashes of colour to the vibrant surroundings."

Ontario Parks 2010 Roadstories

"The 2010 season at Ontario Parks officially opens today (Friday, May 14, 2010). Ontario is Canada’s second largest province. The Ontario Parks system began in 1893 with Algonquin Park. When I was a kid, I went to a summer camp in Algonquin. My best camp memory was a week long canoe trip. On the last leg of our trip, we stopped at Algonquin’s famous Portage Store on Canoe Lake."

Water warning - The Whig Standard - Ontario, CA

"Boaters across eastern Ontario can expect more random spotchecks and higher fines for equipment violations on the water this season.

It's also the first full year in which they will have to carry a pleasure boat operator card from a certified course, or face a $250 fine -- $315 after surcharges.

Some have already learned the hard way that the region's lakes and rivers are no longer the carefree playgrounds they used to be."

Biking Wolfe Island, Ontario | HikeBikeTravel

"Wolfe Island sits at the spot where Lake Ontario joins the St. Lawrence River. According to their website they are in fact one of the Thousand Islands. Wolfe Island is accessed by a year round, free ferry ride from the Kingston waterfront. From May to October you can also ferry over from Cape Vincent, New York. There’s a small customs office at Alexandria Point making it one of the easier points of entry into Canada."

Earthroots - Ontario's forests still at risk

"Toronto - Despite announcements made today, the devastation of Ontario’s forests continues largely unabated. Giant clearcuts, which level forested areas as large as pre-megacity Toronto (10,000 ha), still make up 94% of the area logged each year in Ontario. Canada’s logging industry employs only 2/3 of the workers per tree cut that Sweden employs, and Ontario has still not respected the human right of Indigenous peoples to say “no” to logging on their traditional lands."

Anything can be hazardous for a cyclist - The Barrie Examiner - Ontario, CA

"Mixing cyclists with motorized vehicles is always a fickle thing.

When car meets train, train always wins. When car meets bike, car always wins.

That cyclists are vulnerable is inescapable. Road bikes -- the better the lighter -- offer no protection and there is no prospect for protection.

The best we could hope for is strapping a crafted piece of Styrofoam with a colourful design on our heads. That's helpful in tumbles, not a crash."

Hiking How To

"Hiking can help to alleviate stress, is definitely great exercise and can provide a way to get back to nature that many of us city folk miss. A hike can balance our emotional, physical and spiritual states. There's not many things more peaceful than a backpack trail deep in the woods at 6 am."

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper

"McGuinty Government Working to Make Ontario A Clean Water Leader

As part of its Open Ontario Plan the province is taking steps to make Ontario the leading clean water jurisdiction in North America.
To be introduced later today, the Water Opportunities and Water Conservation Act would, if passed, encourage the creation and export of innovative clean water technology, promote water conservation, attract economic development and create jobs. Among the proposals, the proposed act would:

* Make Ontario a North American leader in developing and selling water technologies and services through the creation of the Water Technology Acceleration Project (TAP) – a technology hub bringing together industry, academics and government to develop the sector and promote it abroad.
* Encourage Ontarians to use water more efficiently by creating and implementing innovative approaches to conservation.
* Strengthen sustainable municipal water planning by helping them identify and plan for long term infrastructure needs."

Wearing helmets crucial for cyclists - Chatham Daily News - Ontario, CA

"Once again, we roll into spring and cyclists appear on our streets. Young and old, for fitness or transportation, helmeted or not, they often compete with motorized vehicles for a place on the pavement.

Take a good look at what our Chatham-Kent cyclists are wearing on their heads. Hats, maybe. Helmets, rarely."

Bear attacks man in rural Ontario | Canada | News | Toronto Sun

"ORILLIA, Ont. - A large black bear has attacked and seriously injured a 48-year-old man in Ontario's cottage country.

The man, who is from the popular cottage area north of Toronto, was attacked Tuesday evening in Severn Twp., located on the southeastern edge of Georgian Bay, said Const. Peter Leon, OPP central region media relations officer.

'My understanding is he has serious injuries to both of his legs and one of his arms,' Leon said.

The man was airlifted to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto for treatment to the non-life threatening injuries.

The wooded area is popular with locals and tourists for hiking, biking and horseback riding, he said."
