Their activities were a foretaste of what is to come March 12 and 13, when the Warkworth Maple Syrup Festival celebrates a quarter century of drawing families from across Ontario and beyond to both the sugar bush and the village"

The LSSD XC Championship is a participation event that encourages all clubs within the LSSD to get their members active in a competitive event. All skiers of all ability levels are encouraged to participate!

An important and fun part of this event is the Club Participation Award.  Each and every skier who races receives points for his or her Club, so the more skiers a Club has, the better a Club will do.

"The Tay Valley Cross Country Ski Club is hosting a Family Ski Day at Murphys Point Provincial Park this Sunday, Feb. 20 from 12:30 to 3 p.m. The day's activities will include snow games, hot chocolate and snacks, skate and classic ski instruction at all levels and a recreational ski in the park. Participants do not need to have their own skis. TVCCSC Youth Coordinator Geoff Hodgins has recently purchased new skis, boots and poles for the club thanks to a Perth Foundation Grant. Beginners will have an opportunity to test their ski legs out on some shiny new equipment. Those interested are asked to contact Geoff Hodgins at geoff.pat.kids@sympatico.ca to register. Loppet unites regional skiers

A mass start comprised of 119 cross-country skiers was the scene to begin the Porcupine Ski Runners' 31st-annual Loppet on Sunday.

The athletes had a choice of using the classic or skate technique on courses that spanned two, five, 10 and 20 kilometres.
While the annual races stir the competitive juices of many regional skiers, the primary goal is to create a large gathering. Once the participants cross the finish line, they're to congregate for lunch.

A key component to his training is rest, particularly before a competition like the Masters, which will demand three days of racing distances 15 km, 10 km and 30 km on separate days, two days of rest between.

Santala of Minden is originally of Finland and was born in 1959.

Growing up in Scandinavia, the 70-year-old remembers learning how to Nordic ski when he was two years old.

Snow way: Free snowshoeing Family Day

Family Day will be full of winter fun thanks to an initiative from the Porcupine Ski Runners and La Caisse Populaire.

Supported by La Caisse, the club will be offering free snowshoe rentals and family oriented activities on Monday, Feb. 21.

"Even if people have small children, snowshoeing is something everyone can do. It's a great winter activity for all skill levels," said Kelleigh Manseau, a youth co-ordinator at the ski club.

Snowmobile riders will hit area trails Saturday in support of children and youth with physical disabilities during the 37th annual Snowarama for Easter Seals Kids.

The event, departing the Rod and Gun Club on Connor Road between 8 and 10 a.m., will be a round-trip ride to Searchmont Resort, including a special day pass to access the trails, a fuel top-up at Goulais River General Store, a hot beverage, snack and trailside bonfire, courtesy of the Sault Trailblazers, and lunch at the resort.

Mushers And Birders Flock To Wye Marsh

"The Wye Marsh Trails are open to cross-country skiers all winter and to dog sleds only on special occassions. Upcoming dates are February 20 and March 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., for $25 per person, which includes admission to the Wye Marsh.

The Wye Marsh also has special events on Family Day, including ice skating on the Wye Marsh, a scavenger hunt, and snowshoeing, as well as cross-country skiing. Also, you can roast bannock and then learn about reptiles or birds of prey during live animal shows."
