Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs Celebrates National Snowmobiling Environment Month with Reduced Sled Emissions
(Barrie, ON. January 31, 2011) - The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) celebrates significantly lower emissions for Best Available Technology sleds during February, National Snowmobiling Environment Month. Powered by cleaner-burning, advanced 4-stroke and next generation 2-stroke engines, today’s snowmobiles help keep nature beautiful by operating more efficiently, effectively and quietly than ever before, while virtually eliminating smoke and smell. Moreover, increased fuel efficiency means that less fuel is being burned, which also results in an overall emissions reduction. Mark Latti: Enjoy trails on snowshoes this winter | The Portland Press Herald / Maine Sunday Telegram
Here's what they write about snowshoeing in Maine -
"Snowshoeing opens a window to another world. Trails, forests and fields that seem so familiar spring through fall take on a totally different look, feel and sound in the winter. If you've never tried it, this winter is the ideal time to do so. And if you can walk, you can snowshoe.
The sport is relatively inexpensive. Prices for various models can range from $50 to $300. Choose a snowshoe based on your weight and the terrain you expect to walk. Snowshoes are loosely categorized into three groups -- recreational, hiking and back-country or technical."

It always seems as though something comes up during training season that skews our plans, so we pin our hopes on the next season and make the best of what we have this year. Making the best of what we have this year has been hard because we have a deficit in the equipment department."

Toronto's Off-Road bike paths
"We will build a comprehensive network of bicycle trails across the city. This will include 100 km of off-road bicycle paths along rail and hydro corridors, ravines and valleys. This system of dedicated 2-metre wide, paved trails illuminated with street lamps will provide a safe, convenient “backbone” for bicycle transportation across Toronto. Cost: $50 million.
We will build 100 km of pedestrian paths alongside the bicycle trails. Walking, jogging and running are inexpensive, effective recreational activities that encourage physical fitness. We will provide a well-lit network of safe, connected paths for runners, joggers and walkers. Cost: included in the bicycle trails cost.
We will create some on-road bicycle lanes where they make sense. Where the community supports them and where they do not impede traffic flow, we will create on-street bicycle lanes and complete some critical connections in the city’s current bicycle network. Cost: $5 million"

Connections: Strategic planning for a County-wide trails network - Bradford Times - Ontario, CA
"An estimated 32% of adults over the age of 18 in Simcoe County are overweight, 21% are obese - and a sedentary lifestyle is the chief culprit. Inactivity costs the health care system in the County an estimated $5.1 billion per year.
Encouraging 'Active Transportation' - walking, running, cycling, skiing, skateboarding - is part of the County's strategy to promote healthy lifestyles - and a connected trail system is a key component of that strategy. Trails are also an economic driver, attracting tourism dollars, providing environmental benefits and educational opportunities."

Crackdown on cycle-paths: Levy | Sue-Ann Levy | Columnists | Comment | Toronto Sun
"I will make no bones about it. Cyclists who use the sidewalks to get from Point A to Point B in this city are for the most part rude, arrogant and a pain in the neck.
I’ve lost count how many times I’ve been startled by sidewalk cyclists aggressively pedalling behind me — without warning — as I walked my two dachsies or jogged on the city’s sidewalks, forcing me and my dogs to quickly jump out of their way.
Dare tell them the sidewalks are for pedestrians. Even dare."

Antiquated bike bylaws need updating: police - thestar.com
"The province decided two years ago that electric bikes should be governed by the same rules as regular bicycles. That decision changed the implications of at least one bylaw. Bicycles with a wheel diameter of more than 61 centimetres cannot go on Toronto sidewalks, but smaller ones can.
Since Vespa-style electric bikes or scooters are built with smaller wheels, the outdated bylaw allows some e-bikers to legally use sidewalks.
“So we have these people whipping along the sidewalks at 32 km/h on a vehicle that can weigh a couple hundred pounds, with a rider,” Smith said. “This is what’s causing us concern.”"

Ontario is truly a paddler’s dream come true, it has literally tens of thousands of lakes and rivers to paddle. What I like about Ottawa is that despite its large size and its status as the nation's capital, the downtown really feels very much like a small town. You don't hear horns honking at every opportunity like in Toronto, and people seem to move at a slower pace."

The Ministry of Transportation and Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs recommend that snowmobilers: obey trail rules and respect posted speed limits; don’t drink and ride; stay on marked trails; check local ice conditions and the weather forecast before heading out; ride according to trail and weather conditions; avoid travelling on unmarked frozen lakes and rivers; ride with caution at night; wear an approved snowmobile helmet and buoyant snowmobile suit; pack a survival kit; never snowmobile alone; and tell someone where you are going, what route you will take and when you plan to return."

GuelphMercury.com - Travel - Travel: Winter getaway in Bruce County: "KINCARDINE — Right off the bat, I break the two golden rules of dogsledding.
Hardly 100 metres onto the winter forest trail in Ontario’s Bruce County, I ricochet off a couple of trees, lose control, topple and let go of the sled.
This is when Victor Hutter’s preliminary words of advice ring again in my ear:
“There’s really only two rules for dogsledding — never let go and don’t run into anything.”
It’s as if Hutter, owner of the Tokamak Kennel in Kincardine, anticipated my double faux pas. And as if the dogs anticipated it as well."

"Turning the defunct Kinghorn CN line into a four-seasons trail would go a long way toward boosting snowmobiling in the area, the region’s snowmobiling association says.
This year, Thunder Bay Adventure Trails spokesman Lloyd Chaykowski said Thursday, 125 trail permits have been sold. That’s about on par with last year, and another marked drop from the 1990s, when more than 1,000 permits would regularly move each season.
“We’d like to see a few more sold,” Chaykowski said. “We’re sort of hoping a few more snowfalls in January will help us out a lot.
“It’s like anything else. Certainly the economy (contributes),” he said.
“We’re one club of 17 in what we call the North of Superior Snowmobile Association. Clubs like Nipigon and further east are suffering."

YorkRegion Article: Georgina project expected for summer use
"Completion of the town’s touted Recreation Outdoor Campus will be “unavoidably” delayed by seven months, but the setback won’t affect use of its many facilities this summer, staff told council Monday night.
Despite the delay, the goal is to have all components of the ROC and multi-purpose trails complete by June 30 and ready for summer use, stated a report by manager of development and business services Brock McDonald.
A slow start by the contractor, necessary design changes, an unseasonably wet summer and early winter and the “sheer magnitude” of the ROC project are to blame for the setback, Mr. McDonald said."

CottageCountryNow Article: Caution urged as ice fishing, snowmobiling season gets underway in the region
"HUNTSVILLE – Winter weather may not mean lake ice is safe, warn Ontario Provincial Police and the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Const. Lynda Cranney, Huntsville OPP media relations officer, said snowmobile operators should check trail statuses with the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs before heading out because some trails might be closed. Trails that travel across water bodies could be dangerous if the ice is not properly frozen, she said.
“A lot of them are not safe right now because of the warm weather we’ve had,” said Cranney of area lakes after a week of higher temperatures in the region. But she also said some areas such as the inlet at the Dwight beach freeze faster because of their location and depth. At the end of December, ice-fishing huts started popping up on top of watery ice in the area."

Everyone encouraged to take a hike - Barry's Bay This Week - Ontario, CA
"The project is entitled 'Footprints in Time,' and will develop a template that can be used to create new trails or enhance existing ones, in an effort to draw more currently sedentary residents to get outdoors.
The impetus for the grant is the current state of inactivity among a large proportion of Renfrew County residents, especially young people.
Keetch presented statistics showing that more than 80 per cent of Canadian youth do not get the recommended amount of physical activity in a day, even with school activities. As a consequence, more than a quarter of young people have been found to be overweight or obese."

"Today the Star ran an article about a plan to build curbs to separate bike lanes in the downtown. Denzil Minnan-Wong, the new chair of the public works and infrastructure committee, has come out in support of building a network of separated bike lanes along major streets. Some streets that already have space carved out with bike lanes - such as Sherbourne - will get curbs separating cars from bikes. Other streets without bike lanes - such as Richmond - may get bi-directional bike lanes. Of course, this plan must pass through the committee and then council, but it's great news for Toronto!"
