"With winter inching ever more near, Mother Nature gave Timmins residents a break with a sunny day to walk the city's trails.
Dozens of people came out with their children and dogs to walk some of the 45 kilometres of trails maintained by the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA) Sunday morning.
Hiking Day, put on in partnership with the MRCA and the Wintergreen Fund for Conservation, is designed not only to promote the trails, but ensure people feel comfortable walking them."

Canadian Running CANADIAN TRAILS: On its Own Merritt
"It may not offer much in the way of mountain views, but the Merritt Trail has something else going for it - history.
Though much of it is wedged between a four-lane highway and what appears to be an irrigation ditch, the Merritt Trail is actually an 11K-long museum. Located in the heart of post-industrial St. Catharines, the stone dust trail follows the route of the first and second Welland Canals - the 19th -century waterways that bypassed Niagara Falls and carried schooners and early steamboats up the 100-metre-high Niagara Escarpment."

Crank the Shield ride report - Event News - BIKEmagic
"Now in its third year CTS has been hailed as eastern North America’s favourite mountain bike stage race. The distance isn’t what we have come to expect in multi-day events – between 54km and 76km a day and climbing is no more than 1200m climbing per stage. The format is a typical rally style race with different camps on different nights starting and finishing at Haliburton Forest, which is about 220km north of Toronto."

Release: Mayoral Candidates Join Cycling Advocates for Morning Commute by Bicycle | Toronto Cyclists Union
"Yvonne Bambrick, the Toronto Cyclists Union’s Director of Communications led today’s 20 person ride with the assistance of Toronto Police. The 30 minute ride, which stayed within the downtown core, allowed candidates to experience almost the full range of scenarios faced on a daily urban commute by bicycle. The ride took candidates on arterials with bike lanes, without bike lanes, on roads with construction, roads scarred by utility cuts, on minor arterials, and on side streets, though because of time constraints, candidates did not experience the less welcoming suburban cycling environment where traffic speeds are higher and few if any cycling facilities currently exist."

Rocco Rossi unveils promising bike plan
"Today's announcement on the other hand is far more promising. While it's still ambitious given Toronto's existing bike lane network, it'd be the type of infrastructure development that could drastically increase the ease and safety by which cyclists travel without sending traffic into gridlock.
The chief characteristic of the plan is that Rossi's bike lanes would all feature a curb to separate cyclists from traffic. Now this is something that cyclists have wanted for years, so when mayoral candidates who are down in the polls suggest plans of this nature it doesn't necessarily inspire much hope that they'll come to fruition. Sarah Thomson, for instance, has also announced her intention to create such bike lanes, in her case on Richmond, Adelaide, and University Avenue."

"The Toronto Cyclists Union encouraged mayoral candidates to get a taste of what it’s like to commute on two wheels during the morning rush.
Joe Pantalone and Rocco Rossi were the only two major mayoral candidates who made it out to Chinatown on Monday to ride with other cyclists. Pantalone, who never learned to ride a bicycle, was chauffeured around the 30-minute downtown route in a flowered rickshaw by campaign flack Mike Smith.

Orillia hears call for sustainability - The Orillia Packet & Times - Ontario, CA
"In autumn 2008, the Trails for Life committee presented a report to city council requesting that the city make a strong push toward improving active transportation infrastructure.

Outdoors in Ontario: Know About Ticks and Lyme Disease - Articles Inventory
"There’s an awful lot of “outdoors” in Ontario. And good weather leads to camping, hiking, picnics or even a day at the beach. Just a little bit of preparation will make sure that Lyme disease doesn’t sideline your summer outdoor adventures
Lyme disease is spread by the bite of blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks). These ticks cannot fly, but settle on tall grasses and bushes until they attach themselves to a person or animal passing by. Lyme disease can have many symptoms, ranging from flu-like symptoms in its early stages or, if left untreated, to more serious symptoms affecting the central nervous system, brain or even heart."
We encourage all persons to be aware of the environment you are going into.

Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority protects the landscape - Thorold News - Ontario, CA
"The Niagara region is home to a number of wetlands – which are essentially marshes and swamps that act as a filter. Without these natural filter systems, the water quality in the region would degrade significantly
'Unfortunately, over time, a lot of these areas have been destroyed because of development or farming practices,' said D'Amario. 'We have to protect what is left.'
As the authority began to evolve over the years after its inception, so did the original regulations that were established to protect the Niagara region."

Best Parks in Toronto for Viewing Autumn Leaves | Backpackers on Dundas
"You can start to see colour changes in the deciduous trees all over Toronto, now that the temperature has dropped and winter is right around the corner. Bright green leaves are turning into the reds, oranges and yellows that Canada is famously known for. There are parks all over the city and here’s a short list of the best ones to enjoy the stunning autumnal foliage:
High Park – High Park (1873 Bloor St., Toronto, ON) is the largest park in the city of Toronto, spanning 399 acres and has various attractions such as nature trails, bike paths, a museum, restaurant and a small zoo. It is one of the most significant natural sites in Toronto and its nature trails features oak and other deciduous trees. The fact that 1/3 of the site is in its natural state makes this park wonderful for enjoying the colours of fall."

Cycle Toronto: BIXI coming to Toronto?
"As you may already know, the City of Toronto is considering investing in and bringing BIXI bikes to Toronto. Last night outside the Think Bike workshop the Toronto BIXI team set up a booth in their bid to sign up 1000 members before the November 30, 2010 deadline. The City requires that 1000 people sign up by this date in order to show a minimum level of interest to make the investment worthwhile. To get the official scoop, check out the Toronto BIXI website."

GPS helping hunters stay on trail - The Sudbury Star - Ontario, CA
"Fewer hunters are getting lost in the bush thanks in part to global positioning satellite technology.
'The numbers are certainly on decline,' said Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Scott Taylor, the emergency response coordinator for the northeastern Ontario region.
'And the GPS, absolutely, I think it made a huge impact.'"
Hopefully more GPS use will ensure hunters are on or in their areas and recreational users are in theirs, creating a safe buffer between armed and unarmed groups.

The Algonquin Outfitters web log: Where did the time go? It's fall!
"Late this summer, the Oxtongue Lake location took delivery of a few special canoes. Swift has been selling their new integrated carbon/Kevlar gunwale system for a year or so and we finally decided to test out a few of these very lightweight canoes in our rental fleet. For the moment, we are surprising customers we know and trust by saying, 'hey, do you want to test out a new canoe?' One of these lucky parties, Tony and Lois, are a couple who have been doing an annual fall trip for many years and always ask for 'the lightest Kipawa you have.' And so, that's what they got. Ontario Trails Continues Long History of Supporting Safe Cycling
Letter to Norm Miller, MPP -
September 8, 2010
Dear Mr. Miller;
On behalf of the membership of the Ontario Trails Council (OTC) we welcome and endorse your effort to introduce a private members bill to improve cycling safety and the building of dedicated cycling lanes.
Since 2002 the Ontario Trails Council has worked with various partners, such as Velo-Ontario, Cycle Ontario Alliance, Bruce County, Manitoulin Island Economic Development, CAN-Bike, Chatham-Kent Trails Committee, Rainbow Routes, Walk and Bike for Life, Go for Green, Ontario Cycles, Toronto Cyclists Union and a host of others to advocate for cost effective cycling insurance, cyclist training for youth, dedicated cycling lanes and public awareness of the economic and health benefits of cycling.
Ontario Trails has made direct comment on the building of cycling friendly roads in North Bay, Thunder Bay, Sudbury and other places. Specifically, in 2003-07 we offered direct input recommending the building of cycling infrastructure as part of the Hwy 11 bridge construction at Hunter's Bay bridge development in Huntsville. We believe that the directive contained in your proposed bill to provide road access to cyclists, or other alternative, would have assured that project managers would have implemented our suggestions.
As a member of the Ontario Trails Coordinating Committee, in partnership with the Ministry of Health Promotion we have often discussed in committee the benefits of on-road cycling and the use of an integrated recreational trails and cycling lanes as an alternative transportation strategy. We made these suggestions in support of the Metrolinx and GTA Greenbelt Development plans, and we ensured these recommendations were carried forward into the Provincial Policy Statement and the Ontario Trails Strategy.
In 2008 in a series of meetings with the Ministers of Finance, Municipal Affairs and Housing, and Transportation, OTC repeatedly made request to make road improvements that see improved road longevity while providing a space for cyclists. It is our hope that your bill will be passed and thereby ensure an easier pathway for groups at the local and regional levels to implement safer cycling alternatives.
Best regards,
Mr. Patrick Connor, SSA, CAE, BA(H)

Sarah Thomson releases “Bike City” Plan | Biking Toronto
"Today saw mayoral candidate Sarah Thomson release her bicycle transportation policy, dubbed Bike City.
Sarah and/or her team has done their homework on this to attract people who love biking… proposing a good chunk of new cycling infrastructure features (ie. bike boxes, bicycle boulevardes, etc) and physically separate bikelanes on University Ave, Richmond Street and Adelaide street.
They have also thought of the non-cycling part of the population (some of whom are hostile to new bikelanes, especially in the old boroughs of the city)… proposing that instead of bikelanes on arterial roads outside of downtown, sharrows are put in instead… with bikelanes implemented as cycling levels rise in that area. This not only solves the complaint of “no one uses the bikelanes” but allows for expansion of a downtown network as that network draws in riders from outside the core."

Toronto 's trail network is a popular destination for mountain bikers, hikers, runners, dog-walkers, school and camp groups, nature enthusiasts, and other users. Trail rehabilitation projects are required to repair the damage caused by the daily wear and tear of such recreational use.

Landowner concerned about unauthorized ATV use - Amherstburg Echo - Ontario, CA
"Unauthorized ATV and off-road vehicle use has a local landowner concerned about public safety.
Construction on the Amherstburg Solar Park located on the corner of North Side Road and Concession 2 North is underway but the landowner Loris Collavino is concerned about those who are using the land without permission.
Collavino said there have been numerous people trespassing on the land and that is something he wants to avoid particularly when it is an active construction site. He has observed people using dirtbikes and ATVs to jump off of mounds of dirt while others have made sharp turns in front of moving trucks and construction equipment."
So is the OTC! That's why we introduced the Trillium Trail Pass as a means of controlling access and ensuring trail development. For a copy of the OTC business plan, approved by trail users in May 2007, e-mail ontrails@gmail.com

The Horse | What Do Healthy Horses and Healthy Fish Have in Common?
The Horse | What Do Healthy Horses and Healthy Fish Have in Common?: "What do healthy horses and healthy fish have in common? More than you think. Conservation Authorities across Ontario typically develop big picture aquatic resource management plans for local watersheds that identify what they and private landowners alike need to do to improve the health of local land and water resources.
A fisheries biologist often points directly to the equine landscape as a positive contributor to healthy watersheds and fish communities. Most equine establishments sustain many acres of well-managed pasture. When pasture is grazed on a proper rotation, frost-seeded in early spring to increase plant production, and small depressions or wet areas are drained using French drains, the horse and the fish in nearby streams maintain better health."

Cyclists set to Bike For The Planet - Northumberland Today - Ontario, CA
"Sustainable Cobourg and Go Green Together hope to encourage more of us to travel by the two-wheel method with the second annual Bike For The Planet event Sept. 11.
It's a simple, free two-hour 13-km. ride around Cobourg to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling.
There's a secondary purpose: to show participants firsthand where bicycling trails are available and where they are not. With the prospect of Via Rail beginning bicycle-tourism runs that stop in Cobourg -- not to mention a mayor who enjoys cycling for recreation -- this has become something of a priority for the town as well."

Forgo cars, study urges - Peterborough Examiner - Ontario, CA
"Peterborough is ready for a transportation change, says the team behind a new report on the way people in the city move around.
The city's compact geography and the abundance of trails and bike lanes make it easier for people to forgo cars and try other ways to travel, said Brett Throop, a Trent University student who carried out the research for the Peterborough Social Planning Council.
'We need to see our streets as great public spaces, rather than as transportation corridors,' Throop said Wednesday."

Calabogie Peaks Adds Access Trail; No More Skating Through Woods - OnTheSnow
"Calabogie, which turns 40 years old this season, has been busy over the summer with a number of trail improvements. The landing area at the top of the Solar Express quad chair has been reshaped to offer a flatter, wider, more beginner-friendly unloading area.
They also are creating a new access trail from the top of the Lakeview chairlift to O'Brien's, Buckshot, and High Falls runs. Skating through the woods across the top of the ski hill to access the advanced terrain will be a thing of the past.
Grading is continuing from the top of the Lakeview chair on the long, easy K&P trail. The flat section across the top of the hill has been re-graded to create a gentle slope, work continues to reduce the pitch on the S-turn, and narrow spots are being widened to remove bottlenecks. You won't have to pole across the top anymore to get going on the beginner trail."

Why we need public input on the land registry system
"Ontario’s new Electronic Land Registration Services Act appears to be an attempt by the provincial government to raise cash by selling off registration access rights, and potentially even registration data, to address its budgetary needs.
The Act received royal assent on May 18, and will come into effect on a day to be proclaimed by the provincial government — without debate or public input. It was introduced on March 25 as part of one of the government’s budgetary bills, and passed through the legislature without any real public knowledge, no publicity and no input from users of the electronic land registration system."

A Brief History of Boys Summer Camps in Algonquin Park, Ontario Canada – ladies leather trousers – Diy Now
"Sure outdoor summer camps and wilderness summer camps sound very exciting! But isn’t there some risk involved? Right, there is risk involved when kids go out in to the deep waters on wild river canoeing or simple canoe adventures. There is risk involved when kids camp during wilderness canoe trips. That’s the reason we have a strong staff of 80 people who are highly trained and experienced in handling camping activities. Our counselors and guides are highly trained and carry certifications in first aid, life saving skills, and paddling. They also have the many years of camping and trip experiences in Camp Pathfinder."
Ganaraska trail, Ontario - Hammock Forums : Your Number One Hammock Community
"This section of trail starts at a boat launch for cottagers just north of Moore's Falls. I've hiked this section a few times but this is the second time I actually camped. The hike takes you over several beaver dams and around a couple of remote lakes.
The site I picked is located on top of a small bluff overlooking Sheldon lake. A well established fire pit was situated right near the edge and someone was kind enough(?) to leave a grill for cooking and there was already a pile of deadwood for my fire that night. I did get a chance to use my new folding saw from Lee Valley tools. It has a japanese style blade which went through the wood like a hot knife through butter.
After setting up my DIY blackbird clone, DIY UQ made from a JR Wally world bag, MEC scout tarp and summer sleeping bag I was ready to get all my camp chores finished. I went into the bush to get more wood ( there's that old adage that once you think you have enough wood, double it ). Plenty of standing dead birch and cedar trees to choose from. I filtered some water from the lake and put up my hammock chair."

Renaissance on the Rideau Canal
"At 5:45 a.m., the first few minutes of daylight are looking good out on Ontario's Rideau River. The pink and purple hues on the eastern horizon foretell a nice sunny summer day, as Gord pilots our little pontoon boat upstream from his private dock in Merrickville, southwest of Ottawa.
On our left is the Merrickville lock station, one of many such stations on the Rideau Canal linking Ottawa and Kingston that was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Farther upstream, still on our left, we pass the Merrickville municipal beach, and up from there, a riverfront bird sanctuary."

Riding in the Short Hills - Get Out Niagara!
"Most horse riders in southern Ontario have to be content with fields, small forests and back roads if they want to ride in the country. Many don’t even have their horse at a barn that’s close to nature. So the Short Hills Provincial Park is a little bit of horse riding heaven. (I apologize up front to bikers and hikers who can get annoyed by horse poop.).
Anyone who’s hiked or biked in there knows how beautiful it is. Within minutes you feel you’ve left the city far behind. I spend most of my riding time training my horse for dressage. Trail riding is not only fun for me but it’s a great break from routine for my horse, Dody."

Algonquin Provincial Park River Canoe Ontario Canada
"As the sun disappears at sunset, the tranquility around the river becomes uncanny as this woman scours the banks for any signs of wildlife. The inside of the canoe is nearly empty except for a backpack and a rope making it easy for this woman to glide across the surface of the river amongst the beauty of Algonquin Provincial Park."
