OPP step up ATV training for quicker response and enforcement - Timmins Times - Ontario, CA

"The popularity of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) is beginning to show up in ways that many riders don't expect. More and more injuries, and deaths, are occurring as more Northerners use the popular machines, not just to travel in remote areas, but also at their camps, cottages and in rural areas of Timmins.

It has prompted the Ontario Provincial Police to respond. Not only are police issuing more public awareness safety messages, but also they're also in the process of ensuring more of their officers can respond to off-road incidents involving ATVs."

It would also be wise to put money into training and a tax recapture to rehabilitate riding areas, as well as building specific riding areas in communities where riders can ride.

Windsor Essex Parkway construction to disrupt trails

"WINDSOR, Ont. — Cyclists, runners and nature lovers who use the network of trails in the Spring Garden nature area can expect some temporary disruptions or detours as the $1.6-billion Windsor-Essex Parkway is built, but the payoff will be worth it, a Ministry of Transportation spokesman said Tuesday.

To the left and right of the highway linking the 401 to a new downriver bridge will be 20 kilometres of trails designed with bridges and tunnels so you can start at Howard Avenue and make it all the way to Malden Road, 11 kilometres, without ever having to cross a street. And this new trail system will be linked at a number of points to the city’s existing trail system, known as the West Windsor Recreationway."

Aggressive cyclists break the law - Owen Sound Sun Times - Ontario, CA

"I 'share the road' with bicyclists whenever possible, including slowing down if it isn't safe to pass. However, the cycling community must somehow deal with some of their own, if this campaign is to succeed.

On June 12, I was stopped in the left turn lane at 10th. St. E. and 3rd Ave. E., waiting to turn to go west. The light turned green, but I didn't proceed. I watched a fit looking man (in his 30s or 40s) with a dark beard on a bicycle, wearing a helmet, run the red light in front of me. He then drove up between the two lanes of stopped traffic. He reached the 10th St. and 2nd Ave. E. intersection just as the light turned green, and then did a quick right turn, in front of the first vehicle in the right lane, and went north on 2nd Ave. E.

If somehow a car driver was able to do this, I would have been able to get a licence number, and vehicle description and contact police. All I could do was watch in amazement. Two of us that day 'shared the road' with that cyclist, and restrained our lawful driving actions to accommodate his unlawful actions."

NiagaraThisWeek Article: Economy needs a boost, says Mackie

"Mackie said one of the main issues in the upcoming election is trying to stimulate the local economy and welcome new business to Lincoln.

“There is so much red tape - costly regulatory burden - that is impacting people,” Mackie said, noting the same goes for property owners, who need to “have their rights protected and be aware of their rights.”

Mackie would like to see the power of planning and development approvals returned to the municipalities and not decision makers who are outside of the municipality and don’t have a working knowledge of the town’s issues. Agriculture, he said, is one of the biggest areas impacted by this, including the restrictions placed on the town’s growth by the Greenbelt."

George Smitherman: Wants a halt to new bike lanes on arterial roadways, but would make sure that current routes are safer and better maintained. He says bike lanes should be separated with properly curbed lanes.

Rob Ford: He wants to build 100 kilometres of off-road bike paths through the city and spend $5 million building on-road bike lanes. He made a gaffe at a mayoral debate last month when he said the Jarvis bike lanes cost $6 million. In fact, the lanes cost just over $60,000.

Joe Pantalone: He’s in favour of building a 1,000-kilometre bike network throughout the city. He also wants bike-only corridors on mayor arteries such as University Ave. and Bay St."

Police cracking down on Welland area ATV riders - Welland Tribune - Ontario, CA

"Niagara Regional Police are targeting unlawful and unsafe operation of all-terrain vehicles and off-road vehicles in Welland, Wainfleet, Port Colborne and Pelham."

The most common offences are:

* Trespassing on private property such as railway allotments, parks and walking/cycling trails.

* Owner Operate Motor Vehicle on a Highway No Insurance. When an off road vehicle is driven on a roadway, it becomes a motor vehicle and the owner would be liable for a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $25,000. An off-road vehicle insured with off road insurance is uninsured when on a roadway.

No machine should be sold without a provincial pass allowing that rider to ride.

Fall ATV Riding in Ontario's Near North

"We excitedly jumped on our Hondas and rode right through town until we hit the trails. It should be mentioned that the town of Mattawa is exceedingly ATV friendly, allowing ATVers to ride on public roads so long as they use proper hand signals and follow the rules of the road. Even local restaurants and accommodations welcome ATV riders with open arms. As Mattawa Voyageur Country Tourism Development Co-ordinator Mike Stiell tells us, it’s not uncommon to see a half dozen ATVs parked in front of a local restaurant."

Operation Impact - Midnorth Monitor - Ontario, CA

"However, 243 people have lost their lives in motor vehicle collisions so far this year on OPP patrolled roadways, in comparison to 236 in 2009.

As the popularity of all-terrain vehicle riding in Ontario continues to grow and although it's an exciting recreational activity for many, it is not without risk. During hunting season, the use of off-road vehicles in Ontario increases at this time of year. Therefore; officers will also be patrolling local area trails to ensure that riders complying with the legislation. As of October 3, 2010, 12 people have died in off-road related crashes this year in OPP patrolled jurisdictions as opposed to 20 in 2009."

Everyone wins when cycling is integrated into the community - St. Catharines Standard - Ontario, CA

"Courville travels the world on business and sees first-hand the impact of cycling. As a 41 year old, he will live, and shape, the future of North America -- one in which he believes cycling will play an increasing role.
Courville's advice to Ontario cycling advocates was: 'Ditch speaking for an embattled minority. Start speaking for everyone.'

The implication was cycling is too often viewed as a win-lose proposition by vehicle drivers and cyclists. It is anything but. Everyone wins when cycling is integrated into the physical and cultural fabric of a community: less congestion; enhanced business environment to attract young talent; tourism; public health and more."

Ontario Trails Council has been giving cyclists Courville's message since 2002. Bike lanes worth it, Wynne says - Owen Sound Sun Times - Ontario, CA

"Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne said Tuesday that paved shoulders on Hwy. 6 should improve safety for cyclists and drivers and help the area's economy by boosting tourism.Crews are resurfacing and paving shoulders one metre wide on the 66-kilometres of Hwy. 6 between Mar and Tobermory, as well as 23 km. on Manitoulin Island north of Hwy. 542. It's part of a trial project for the province's new active transportation program that will see more cyclists sharing the road with drivers.'I think it's important that when we are making policy on infrastructure that we look at the economic needs of communities, and this area is so important in terms of tourism. It's about bike and vehicle safety and it's also about economic development and tourism,' Wynne said. 'We're told that this extra metre of pavement on the side of the road is going to make a big difference for the cyclists, and to be fair, I think it makes a big difference for the other vehicles that are sharing the road with cyclists to know there is that margin on the side of the road.'"

Trail plan going to council in 2011 - Petrolia Topic - Ontario, CA

"WYOMING — A final proposal for a Reeces Corners to Wyoming trail is going to Plympton-Wyoming council early in the new year.

Coun. Ben Dekker said a trail committee held an information meeting recently for Oil Heritage Road landowners affected by the proposed trail route and added they were all supportive of the $375,000 project.

Dekker said the committee met after the public session, addressed potential revenue sources and reviewed a draft information package for distribution to potential financial supporters.
Dekker — who chairs the committee — said his goal is to give a complete proposal to council early in 2011.

The two-mile, asphalt trail is tentatively scheduled to open in 2011 and $20,000 was set aside in this year's municipal budget for engineering and survey work for the trail."

YourOttawaRegion Article: Horton Township man dies in ATV accident

Officers of the Kirkland Lake OPP detachment are investigating the single ATV accident that occurred on an Ontario Northland Railway rail bed about two kilometres northeast of Virginiatown.
Gauthier, who was hunting in the area, was last seen by members of his hunting party about 2:30 p.m. Sunday. After he was reported missing late that night, an extensive ground and air search was conducted.
Gauthier was found alive, but pinned under his ATV that had rolled off the rail bed, by OPP Emergency Response Team members at 4:20 p.m. Monday. Shortly afterwards he went into medical distress, and lifesaving efforts by police and medical officials were unsuccessful."

Bixi Toronto Inches Closer to Reality - Torontoist

"We're pretty confident we'll get there,' Egan said.

As for that other launch target: last Friday the membership pledge count was at 800, according to Bixi Toronto's Facebook page. Each yearlong membership pledge costs $95 up front ($107.35, after tax), and is refundable if Bixi falls short of its launch goals and doesn't materialize. Other cities that use PBSC bikes and stations charge between $50 and $78 annually, making Bixi Toronto slightly expensive by comparison. But supporters point out that, since Bixi Toronto would be available year round, it would actually be cheaper, per month, than the Montreal version, which at $78 per year is only available from May until November.

The City of Toronto has devoted a few staffers to the rollout push. Aside from City managers like Egan, who were instrumental in negotiating with PBSC and selling the plan to City Council, there are also junior staff members who have been busy marketing Bixi to the public. They've been out on Toronto's streets for the past few months, lugging an itinerant Bixi demonstration station to street fairs and the like, so that passers-by can learn about the system and try out the bikes."

30-mile trek through bush - Timmins Daily Press - Ontario, CA

This was the beginning of the now famous Porcupine Trail, Ontario's own Chilkoot Pass, a rough stretch of land that brought in hundreds of prospectors and mining men, all hopeful for a repeat performance of the Klondike discoveries in the bush of New Ontario."

Youth Canoe Building Program | Aviva Community Fund

"My idea is to create a program for youth based on canoe building.
The canoe building programs would be with groups like First Nations youth or even inner city youth….such programs could build in skill development….on traditions and culture….and add to self esteem. Besides these, the canoe is a great building tool to also teach about Canadian history, culture and identity. Especially for new Canadians or those in urban centres without much exposure to the outdoors."

Transport initiative would beat a better path for school travel

"Cars clogging the school bus zone, drivers pulling U-turns, kids jaywalking and congestion everywhere — traffic was becoming such a headache at Broadview Avenue Public School that some parents didn’t want their children walking to the Westboro elementary school out of fear something bad might happen.

“A lot of parents were telling us they were really nervous someone was going to be hit by a car,” said Karen Mason, a parent of two students at the school.

The parent council set out to find a solution and, in doing so, became part of a new initiative called the School Travel Planning Project."

Ontario Cyclist

Ontario Cyclist: "Three people walking in an Ontario park were hit by lightning a few months ago and are in hospital. In Canada alone, 10 people will die and 160 are injured by lightning each year.

Bike safety is important when bike touring as well. We often cycle when its raining and providing you have good gear such as a Gore-Tex jacket and waterproof panniers you just ride out the storm, no problem. However if there is lightning strikes in the area sitting on bicycle is a risk, the metal frame and skinny bike tires conduct electricity and will not insulate you."

The business owner, also the owner of the ATV, noticed the vehicle was missing shortly after it was pushed away and called police at about 10:30 a.m. After an investigation, police determined a man had removed it sometime around 10 a.m. Robertson said the 2011 Honda ATV was found about 500 metres away from the residence of the suspect, who was arrested Thursday."

Lon's Article Directory Outdoors in Ontario: Know About Ticks and Lyme Disease

"There’s an awful lot of “outdoors” in Ontario. And good weather leads to camping, hiking, picnics or even a day at the beach. Just a little bit of preparation will make sure that Lyme disease doesn’t sideline your summer outdoor adventures
Lyme disease is spread by the bite of blacklegged ticks (also known as deer ticks). These ticks cannot fly, but settle on tall grasses and bushes until they attach themselves to a person or animal passing by. Lyme disease can have many symptoms, ranging from flu-like symptoms in its early stages or, if left untreated, to more serious symptoms affecting the central nervous system, brain or even heart."
Furthermore, he also explains how to protect yourself from tick bites when you are outdoors in Ontario. To learn more about Lyme disease, visit www.ontario.ca/lyme

Spinning our wheels on bike lanes - St. Catharines Standard - Ontario, CA

"In the past year, Jacob Schwenk has paid the city twice to ride his bicycle on Welland Ave.

The first time, in late 2009, Schwenk the taxpayer paid for new bike lanes -- later removed due to complaints from local businesses -- on the busy street between Grantham Ave. and Neilson Ave.

Soon after, Schwenk the cyclist paid again: a $60fine for riding on the sidewalk.

'Yeah, I know it's illegal. It's not like I want to be on the sidewalk, deking around people,' he said. 'But this section (of Welland Ave.) is just too dangerous. I'm not going to ride a foot away from a transport truck with no separation.... I feel like $60 is kind of a hefty fine for trying to protect myself.'"

Windsor urged to be premier cycling city

"More bike paths and bike-friendly infrastructure -- and maybe even a lot more cyclists -- could be in Windsor's near future.
After being told the city they represent fits the same cycling profile as bike-mad Holland, councillors on Monday night voted unanimously to pursue Windsor's designation as Canada's first 'Bicycle Friendly Community.'
First, Windsor has to be assessed and rated according to an evaluation that has seen hundreds of communities across the United States qualify for the title."

Lake Ontario Waterkeeper

"First, the Act currently favours the development of hard technologies, such as water efficient cooling towers and advanced water treatment technologies. It is less explicit about supporting the type of natural or ‘green’ technologies that define sustainable communities. Supporting techniques such as rainwater harvesting, green roofs, permeable pavements, urban forests and wetlands would not only improve the livability of our cities, it would also conserve water, reduce water pollution and ease the pressure on aging infrastructure. At the same time, it would create opportunities for a myriad of new entrepreneurial businesses and services involved in the design, manufacture and installation of these innovative techniques.

Second, in order to transform the culture of water use in Ontario, all Ontarians need to be involved and working together to improve our collective water stewardship. The province should therefore work with cities such as Hamilton to institute a comprehensive public education campaign.

Lastly, the Act needs to ensure that clear targets for water conservation are established at provincial and municipal levels and establish a transparent process to report on progress in meeting these targets to all Ontarians."

durhamregion.com | Ajax considers canoe and kayak rentals at Rotary Park

"The already popular Rotary Park may soon offer even more recreation options with the addition of canoe and kayak rentals.

Currently there is a boat launch at Rotary Park which members of the public use to access Duffin's Bay and Lake Ontario for canoeing and kayaking. Ajax also holds canoeing camps there for children.

In January, council asked staff to come up with a feasibility report on allowing canoe and kayak rentals at the site.

'We thought it might be a good location for a vendor to set up a canoe and kayak rental,' said Howie Dayton, Ajax's director of recreation and culture."

Making recreation more accessible is a sensible first step in improving health. OTC
