Ontario Trails News - all about the unique value of Ontario Trails

About Membership - Mr. Jack De Wit, OTC President

Dear Members - With your support this week we achieved new levels of membership support.

I often get questioned what are the benefits of an OTC Membership? Well as a charity you are supporting our good works. From Kenora to Temiskaming to Windsor to Cornwall.

The OTC is the only 18 discipline, all trails, multi-use, single use, trail development, fund seeking, policy changing, government influencing, community assisting trail organization in Ontario. And more.

And only one of a handful of this type, nationally.

Your financial support may not return directly to your community, but with it, by keeping the OTC viable, we are able to preserve or develop trails somewhere in Ontario.

Further in this bulletin we will tell you about some of the programs and services your financial support allows us to pursue and secure.

Right now we are assisting in trail development or programs in Northern Ontario, Georgian Bay, and in South Western Ontario, as well as Toronto, Hamilton, Hastings, Middlesex, Peel, Simcoe, and other places!

We still have real services to pay for, telephone, audits, travel etc. So please take the time to renew your support today!
Sincerely, Jack De Wit, President.

Ontario Trails News - with your support we are enabled to perform trail work all over Ontario. Thanks

Membership Update Message from Mr. Jack De Wit, OTC  President

Dear Members - We are making great headway with your support!

I understand that we received at least another 6 membership renewals since last week. Thank-you we appreciate your help. This helps keep the membership renewal momentum going.

Some of our returning members are Frontenac County, Clearview Township, Credit Valley Conservation, Georgian Bay Coast Trail, Township of Madawaska Valley and the Town of Halton Hills. Thank-you.

However, we have also secured some new memberships as well. We wish to thank Quinte Conservation,  LSRCA, LTVCA, FABR and the Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve for their support of our youth work outreach. We appreciate your support!

Through your support we are able to have an office, apply for grants, etc., engage in National Funding efforts like the National Trails Coalition and the Canadian Trails Federation. We wish to thank our partners for enabling us to do trail work at the national levels. Quite an accomplishment for a provincial trails organization.

We also support trail planners, existing plans and previously negotiated trail development agreements.

I encourage you to read the next article a letter OTC sent to the Council of New Tecumseth Ontario.

Your financial support may not return directly to your community, but with it, by keeping the OTC viable, we are able to preserve or develop trails somewhere in Ontario.

Please e-mail Patrick if your cheque has been mailed, use paypal or call the office and they'll take a credit card number over the phone.

Once more, Sincerely, Jack De Wit, President.

Ontario Trails Council - please renew and support the Ontario Trails Council - Thanks

A Message from Mr. Jack De Wit OTC  President

Dear Members - Let me say this has been a great year for retaining and acquiring new members to the OTC.

Thanks to the new groups, such as Short Hills Cycling Club, North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority and Marathon. There are too many new members to list them all here, so I'd just like to say thanks to all of you. New partners like you revitalize our organization; and as a board member and trail volunteer it's great to see OTC supporting new trail groups!

We also rely on renewing members, like Park to Park Trail Association, Essex Region CA, London, Toronto and Niagara. Thanks to you all of you as well. Through your support the OTC has nearly 200 members!!

However I am writing to ask you to make a timely dues renewal, many existing members are in arrears. While payment of membership dues is not the best lead story, we are working to balance our budget and your renewal will do this!

Through your support we are able to have an office, apply for grants, etc. The OTC travels to many communities, places like Georgian Bay, Niagara, Toronto, Prince Edward County, Ottawa, etc. to assist communities with trail development.

"Having OTC in town to assist with guidance as to the elements of master planning, risk management, trails training and getting planners and users together made a real difference to the major trails in our area." Tracey - Niagara Falls, Ontario.

Some of you have renewed your commitment to OTC via e-mail or by phone. Some of you have re-affirmed your intention to renew on more than one occasion. However, we are at year end and we need your membership dollars to meet our commitments.

At this late date I would ask you to e-mail Patrick if your cheque has been mailed, use paypal or call the office and they'll take a credit card number over the phone. We are trying to complete as many renewal deposits by March 31 as possible.

We do appreciate your support and I hope you'll join in keeping OTC involved as the important trails community organization it has become.

Sincerely, Jack De Wit, President.

Legal Input Sought
Is there a law in Ontario you think needs to be changed? The Law Commission of Ontario (LCO) reviews existing provincial laws to see whether they can be improved or repealed or whether circumstances require new laws. We also review government policy and practices.

The LCO welcomes law reform proposals from individuals and organizations, including academics, jurists, lawyers, community and advocacy groups, labour organizations, businesses and members of the public. We are accepting proposals until March 21, 2014. This is the second and final call for proposals for projects to begin later this year and to take us into what we hope will be our third mandate beginning in January 2017.
Please be aware that the LCO does not provide funding for others to undertake projects, but undertakes Board-approved projects in-house.
For more information about making a proposal, and to find out how the LCO selects projects, see our website. See the range of projects we have completed and are undertaking now. You can learn about our funders and supporters and more about the LCO at www.lco-cdo.org.

Burlington
Due to the weather conditions, the planned Public Open House scheduled for Wednesday February 5th at Appleby Ice Centre for the Burlington Transportation Master Plan and Community Trails Strategy is cancelled.  We will be looking to re-schedule this public meeting in the near future and will send notice once it has been arranged.  Thank you for your understanding.

Toronto - Ontario Place
I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know that we’ve had a very successful public meeting last month, with over 200 people participating in-person and online. All of the meeting materials, and a recording of the webcast, are available on our website for those of you that are interested and were unable to attend.

I would appreciate your help once again in encouraging people to participate by filling out our online survey by spreading the word  through your various communications and social media channels – you can forward the information below this email. Our online consultation survey is available until February 21 and focuses on the concept design. We are getting great feedback through the survey, but want to continue to reach out to get feedback and ideas from across Ontario. Click the pic to get to the survey.

Ontario Trail News - about trail membership, trail services and snowmobling on Ontario Trails!

Ontario Trail Memberships - Annual Drive on Now

Once again its that time of year where we send out our membership invoices. We have made a modification for 2014.
  • Many groups have verbally committed to OTC for membership in 2013. If you did we are sending you an invoice that reflects this outstanding commitment.
  • Invoices are net 30, so we are sending earlier to avoid staff departure for the holidays, so they can be processed.
Recently we read an appeal by the Appalachian Trail to the community to help make its budget. They are $771,000 in need. In comparison the OTC needs your support - but collectively to make this years budget our goal is $24,000. Your act of renewal keeps us open and functioning. Across 140 members that is $171.42 per group. Please do your part and pay on time!

Benefits: real work through your membership support.
  • OTC Education Program - the trail strategy calls for sector training. Through OTC you have a mechanism
  • OTC Advocacy - the OTS consultations are the result of your Board at work
  • Trail Projects - from Georgian Bay to North Shore of Superior to the Guelph to Goderich Greenway we are assisting communities to have the trails they want.
  • Saving Trail - in Welland and Niagara we are saving the trail that was closed
  • Building Trail - we have assisted in the hands on building of trail in Eastern Ontario
  • Trails By Type - through our efforts use groups are better organized and this has led to the development of horse trails in Norfolk County for example
  • Trail Master Planning - because of our provincial conference the Oxford County is engaged in a trail planning exercise, and we have commented on that.
  • Weekly News Bulletins - Trailwise tells the rest of the trail community about what you are doing on your trails
  • Justifying your Trails - through the Trail Counts Program you can tell your community who uses your trail and how much they use it.

Snowmobile Week Riding - November 24-30, 2013

(Barrie, ONNovember 22, 2013) – The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) and its member clubs are celebrating the coming sledding season during Get Ready to Go Snowmobiling Ontario Week, November 24 to 30. The celebration starts as club volunteers are hard at work clearing, preparing and signing over 30,000 kilometres of OFSC trails. Although OFSC trails are not available for snowmobiling at this time, early indicators are very positive for a great 2014 snowmobile season ahead, with long-range forecasts predicting a cold, snowy winter and many parts of the province already having experienced below zero temperatures and early snowfalls. More Information Here

From the Clubs- go to the Ontario Snowmobile Trails FB Page and see the newsfeed, stories posted by Clubs there. Such as:

We have updated the host site surveys for 2014 and 2015. Thanks to the various organizations and locations that expressed an interest. 2015 still open for application. 2014 status will be reviewed by Conference Committee.
