News Release

Province Releases New Cycling Strategy

Ontario Government Committed to Safe, Sustainable Transportation

Ontario has released a new cycling strategy to promote safe cycling and encourage more people to ride their bikes to work, school and recreation destinations.
The strategy presents a 20-year vision that supports cycling by encouraging and promoting:
  • Healthy, active and prosperous communities
  • Improvements to cycling infrastructure
  • Safer highways and streets
  • Improved cycling awareness
  • Tourism opportunities
The strategy reflects input from the public and expert advice from cycling stakeholders such as Share the Road Cycling Coalition, the Canadian Automobile Association and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.  The government will release next steps to implement the strategy by spring 2014.
Supporting safe cycling and encouraging sustainable transit is part of the Ontario government's plan to help reduce congestion and strengthen communities and the economy.

Quick Facts

  • A draft of the cycling strategy was posted online for public feedback from Nov. 30, 2012, until Jan. 29, 2013.
  • In 2010, two million Canadian visitors spent $391 million while cycling in Ontario — an 18 per cent increase over the previous year.
  • According to the Canadian Medical Association, a 10 per cent increase in physical activity could reduce direct health care expenditures by $150 million a year.
  • Ontario has the second-lowest cycling injury rate of all Canadian provinces.

Quotes

Glen R Murray
CycleON is a strong and integrated, made-in-Ontario strategy. It has been developed with input from the public, cyclists and advocates. Our goal is to make Ontario the premier cycling province in Canada – a place that promotes safe and healthy travel alternatives connecting people to their jobs, schools, parks and places of interest right across the province.

Helping Communities Attract Investment and Create Jobs

Ontario moving forward with Investment Ready Program

Office of the Premier
Premier Kathleen Wynne spoke at the annual conference of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario today, where she unveiled new details about Ontario's Investment Ready: Certified Site Program.
The new program gives investors a greater degree of certainty when looking for development opportunities in Ontario municipalities. It will help companies looking to locate or expand their businesses in Ontario make quick, informed decisions and get projects underway sooner.
Designed to appeal to global investors, the program will give municipalities a chance to showcase their communities, attract new investment and help create jobs. This new initiative is part of the government's strategy to foster a competitive business climate in communities across Ontario.

Quick Facts

  • Ontario’s Investment Ready: Certified Site Program is Canada’s first province-wide certified site program.
  • The program will provide detailed information on locations within a community that are ready to be developed, including availability, utilities servicing, access and environmental concerns.
  • To be eligible for the program, sites will need to meet mandatory requirements in relation to site ownership, availability for sale/lease, minimum property size, public road access, municipal planning and zoning, and servicing and utilities.
  • Applications will need to be submitted jointly by either municipalities or economic development organizations and the owner(s) of the site.
  • Financial assistance will be available to help cover some of the costs incurred during the certification process. The application process is set to open later this year.

Quotes

Kathleen Wynne
We are confident that our new site certification program will make it easier for businesses to grow and expand in communities across the province. We want to do everything we can to help create jobs and attract investment to build strong, vibrant communities and we look forward to working together with our municipal partners.
Premier of Ontario
Dr. Eric Hoskins
The Investment Ready program will help communities across the province attract investment and create jobs. This is just one of the ways our government is strengthening local economies in partnership with municipal leaders.
Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment
Site Certification is another important tool to help our members attract investment projects to the communities they serve. Competition for international investment is intense, and a certified site designation can help a development opportunity stand out from the crowd.

Province Launches Strategy to Create a Lasting Pan Am and Parapan Am Games Legacy

Ontario is launching its Pan Am and Parapan Am Games Promotion, Celebration and Legacy Strategy to increase the economic benefits and support them in becoming the People's Games.

The Games and Games-related investments will create more than 26,000 jobs - a boost of 11,000 jobs from an earlier assessment, and grow Ontario's real GDP by $3.7 billion from 2009 to 2017.

A key part of the strategy is a plan to celebrate and showcase Ontario talent from the stage to the stadium in local communities. The strategy will also create a lasting legacy for people across Ontario by:

  • Enhancing support for live music, celebrations and festivals, adding to Ontario's reputation as a live music destination
  • Helping kids stay active and healthy
  • Encouraging families to get outside and enjoy Ontario's trails
  • Strengthening business development opportunities in the Pan Americas for Ontario's companies
  • Promoting volunteerism during the Games by organizing and training up to 20,000 municipal and TO2015 volunteers
  • Supporting athlete and sport development at all levels - from amateur to high-performance athletes
  • Showcasing Ontario's diverse communities, including Aboriginal, Francophone and LGBT communities.
Supporting a memorable and successful 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games is part of the Ontario government's plan to showcase the province, while creating jobs and positioning Ontario as a sport tourism destination for years to come.

QUICK FACTS

  • The 2015 Games will be the largest international sport event ever held in Canada and will be seen by hundreds of millions of people across the Americas and the Caribbean.
  • The Games will attract as many as a quarter million visitors who will stay in local hotels, see great shows and attractions, dine in restaurants and shop in the province’s stores.
  • Ontario will invest $42 million over three years in the Promotion, Celebration and Legacy Strategy for the Games.
  • The Pan American Sport Organization (PASO) will host its next Annual General Assembly in Toronto October 7-10, 2013 – showcasing our province pre-Games.
  • The province will make appropriate and necessary investments to ensure Ontarians and visitors can enjoy the Games in a secure and safe environment, traffic disruptions are minimized and public health is protected.

Laurentian 8 mountain bike relay coming to North Bay

Wednesday, August 14, 2013   by: Mark PareThe Laurentian 8 is set to test mountain bike riders young and old, and of all skill levels.

Laurentian Ski Hill and Pro Sports Management have teamed up to bring the first eight-hour mountain bike relay to Northern Ontario on October 5, set in the North Bay Nordic Ski Club trails. The funds raised from the event will go to the ski hill. Co-convenor of the event Tim Simpson says all ski hills have to be four-seasons nowadays to be viable financially.

“Laurentian has traditionally been a one-season resort so this is all part of turning it around. This is going to be the first of more than just one event,” he said.

“This will help what we hope to eventually expand maybe into the BMX, into the road race, into the trick biking and that’s where it really comes from, the idea of it. The mountain bike because of our beautiful trails, the fall colours, it just seems like a natural fit for our area.”
